Where are the closest beaches to Gloucester? Ideally pebble/shingle.

Probably somewhere around Brean - south of Bristol, Weston Super Mare way - but sandy. OR South Wales - Penarth, Ogmore, Southerndown..., mostly sand and pebble.

Thanks. What's Barry like?

Never been to Barry - but I get the idea that it is "seaside" - candy floss, fair ground rides etc rather than just "beach".

Barry is sandy, there is a beach area at Llantwit Majors near Cardiff that has strange rock formations and pebbles, quite good for rock pooling:

There are small pebbly beaches at Portishead and Clevedon but Weston/Brean are sand, you would be looking at North Devon (Lynton/Lynmouth area) for pebbles.

The beach In Clevedon is on the seafront by the peir, the beach in Portishead is a short walk from the Lake Grounds, you walk along the coast path, past the golf club and there are steps on your right to get on the beach.

Woolacombe Bay is gorgeous in North Devon.
