I was wondering whether any of you lovely lot knew anthing about Naples?

We are spending the day there in a few weeks (crusie), with our 3 yo ds, was just wondering what was must do/see/any tips - is it actually worth getting off the boat Wink

Any knowledge would be most appreciated.

TIA

If the cruise is doing trips outside Naples probably worth going-Amalfi coast-sorrento, positano etc beautiful , Pompeii worth a visit too-beautiful part of the world.
Not sure about Naples its self though ?

I went quite a few years ago and agree Pompeii worth a visit. Also, you can take a very short boat trip over to Capri which is nice. There are some lovely restaurants overlooking the sea at Naples but just be careful as the crime rate is very high there, lots of pickpockets/bag snatchers. I had my credit card cloned when I was there so just be a bit careful

Naples is grubby, crime-ridden and full of moped drivers braying for your life. However there is something about it, and you could get at least 1 days worth of entertainment. There are some fab churches along the Spacca Napoli, the Campo Flegri are pretty amazing, and our favourite bit was the subterranean tour - You start from a really unassuming doorway on a random street and get taken into an amazing world of caverns and very narrow passages which have been wells, aquifers, hiding places from invaders and bombs etc. They even do it by candlelight which is cool! (not for the claustrophobic though)

Do watch your wallets and don't wander off the main path or at night (the area around the train and bus station is pretty bad).

As others have said if you can get away from Naples there are some amazing sights. Pompeii (or Herculano for a more compact site), Sorrento and the Amalfi coast, Capri is very lovely or you could take the walk around the Vesuvius crater.

Have a lovely time!

Am actually thinking about giving it a miss and staying on the boat..is that bad? TBH, we'll have done Rome the day before, and have to try and think about ds who is 3 1/2 - doesnt sound like it would be much fun for him.

Will have a look at the tours that the cruise line offer - have also thought about Capri.

Capri is beautiful, I would highly recommend it

Sorrento is quite touristy but still gorgeous for a mooch and Capri is just devine (may be biased as we spent our first anniversary there and it has been downhill ever since! By that I mean the where we spend our anniversary not the marriage!) We did the Almalfi course pre DS so hard to think about child friendly stuff - there is a lovely little island called Ischica (not sure if that is spelt right) where you could potter around quite happily, lot less stressful than Rome! And there is a spa/swimming complex along the coast somewhere (not very helpful sorry I will pop back when I remember the name) which would be good for a day with kids but I suppose you could just as easily do that on the boat! To miss Capri would be a shame though IMO.
