Swish (but not too swish) hotels in Kent/Sussex?

Having spent our tenth wedding anniversary under canvas Hmm DH and I are hoping to celebrate slightly belatedly next month. Any recommendations for somewhere reasonably fancy somewhere close to our babysitters in Kent? I always hanker after the sea, but anywhere with nice rooms and somewhere interesting to mooch would be great.

The George in Rye is nice - we went there last October under similar circumstances.

Thank you! Will check it out. I love Rye.

I've long had a hankering to stay at Zanzibar hotel in Hastings, but have not yet had an excuse. Might be a bit gimmicky?

The George is unavailable any weekend in September Sad

It did look perfect...

We couldn't get into the George either a couple of years ago so stayed opposite at the White Vine HOuse. Its small but we loved it. We stayed in the 'best' room which was great - huge, big 4 poster (non chintz), big bathroom. Owners were lovely. We didn't eat there because it was more a bistro but eat at the George but its literally across the road. We were quit pleasd actually to have gone there rather than the George in the end.

The Hotel du Vin in Tunbridge Wells is very nice, or The Buxted Park Hotel is supposed to be nice.

Fab - thank you! Have lots of windows open and am sending DH lots of links Grin

Buxted Park is lovely.

HOw about somewhere like the George in Cranbrook

or a couple of the (nice) pubs in Goudhurst do rooms too. Lovely Kentish countryside round there - beautiful villages etc.

There are a couple out Tenterden way too. Tenterden is lovely to wander about.
