Can i use baby carrier instead of car seat?

Hi,
i need to take my 7months old in a cab, to the airport. Taxis do not provide seats for such children - only boosters suitable from 2yo. I was thinking to have baby in the baby bjorn and put the seat belt around my body, between me and the baby? (such that i dont end up with me and baby both strapped by one seat belt, i read this was not safe). Is it safer to carry her this way as opposed to just on my lap?
thanks

No. If a baby must be carried rather than in a car seat, the belt must not go around them. In the event of an accident they would be crushed and may stand a slight chance of survival if they are just on your lap.

No.

Is there not another way of you getting to the airport?

But that's not what she's asking Secret: "I was thinking to have baby in the baby bjorn and put the seat belt around my body, between me and the baby? (such that i dont end up with me and baby both strapped by one seat belt, i read this was not safe). "

I'm afraid I don't know the answer, but it would seem safer than wearing the belt yourself and just holding your baby. Quite right never to put the belt around you both.

but the effect is still basically the same. The baby is being held in position against her chest, and tbh, I don't know how she could safely put the seatbelt on and then strap the baby into the carrier. Taxi driver won't like all the pissing about at either end of the journey.

I have done this when the only other option was to hold my baby in my arms. I also made sure the belt was between me and my baby. I doubt the clips on the baby Bjorn would hold in a serious accident but it seemed safer than just holding ds.

I just got into the taxi with ds already in the carrier and slipped the seatbelt through the carrier between me and ds, there was no pissing about.

Obviously having the baby in a car sear would be much preferable.

At least the pressure of the belt would be taken by her and not the baby...

Flying through the windscreen is also not good.

With the baby bjorn you sort of clip the baby to a harness you wear.

But, yes, another mode of transport with a baby seat would be the safest. Certainly.

I've done it several times with DC 3 and 4 when they were babies and when we were travelling to and from the airport with no car sets. It was no problem getting in and out the taxis and putting the seatbelt between me (or DH when he had them) and the baby and was as safe and secure as you are going to get without a car seat. Didn't take more than a few seconds to do up so no 'pissing about'.
In my opinion, much safer than just having baby on lap

Suslik · 23/08/2010 23:27

Thanks to all so much! fully agree, car seat is safest. no pissing about, just as some of you described - baby in carrier, get in the car, strap myself in but not the baby.

anyway, think finally convinced DH to risk the meteor valet parking instead, and just drive...
