Days out near Ashbourne, Derbyshire

I'm going there for a week with dp and all boys (8yo, 6yo and 2yo) and my sister and kids (9 and 3) are joining us on Monday, for one day only.

Suitable day trips/activities will be welcomed. Looks like we'll have rain on at least two of the days...

Just a short way from Dovedale which is lovely. Nice walk along the river with stepping stones to cross and look out for fossils in the scree. If you make it all the way to Milldale (3 miles) there is a tiny information centre, loos, a shop that sells cups of tea and a nice place to paddle or feed the ducks.

Matlock Bath, haven't been since I was a teenager I think but I assume the cable car is still there!

Yes the cable cars are part of the Heights of Abraham attraction. There are tours of the caves at the top. Check the website for details and to see if its appropriate for your children.

May be a bit of a drive but my kids loved Chatsworth when they were younger - the adventure play area and the farm area (i have sat through the milking demo more times than I would like to think about). You could spend the whole day there - nice tea rooms etc but you might want to take a picnic :)
