New York in half term

We are contemplating a 3/4 night break in NY in October.
Can anyone recommend a nice hotel- one that's fairly central. I have no idea what hotels cost, but don't want a "cheap" one- but not the most expensive!
There's me, dh, dd (14) and ds (11).
I've previously stayed at Hotel Edison, near Times Square which was quite noisy.

We stayed at the [http://www.70parkave.com/ 70 Park Avenue Hotel] at Easter and I would definitely go back there. Quiet location very near Grand Central Station made it really easy getting around town by subway. Comfy, stylish, but not too pricy - if you can book in advance its cheaper, I booked through lastminute.com.
We had a room with two double beds which was big enough for me and 2 dc.

I was all set to stay at the Hilton Garden Inn New York West 35th before the ash cloud put paid to my plans.

However its well rated on tripadvisor, very reasonably priced, close to Penn Station (for easy transport to any of the NYC airports) in a quiet Midtown area but right next to a number of subway lines, and across the street from Macy's and all of the shopping on 34th st. You may also get a view of the Empire State building.

i booked it via Expedia, via quidco for cashback.

I stayed at The Lexington very nice central hotel but in a quieter location than Times square (about 10 blocks up from Bloomingdales and near Grand Central was very nice and not too costly for NYC

Just come back from staying at the Grand Hyatt on East 42nd St next to Grand Central Station. Got a good deal through Thomas Cook for hotel & flights. It was my 16yr old dd & I & we had a twin bedded room.
