Hi,

I'm going to New York at the end of the month and was hoping you could give me advice on how much money I will need for a week for eating etc. Also some idea on what clothes to take?

Thanks

We were in NY at Easter and it felt expensive - restaurant prices comparable with London. Three of us would easily spend $50 on brunch, albeit in a nice place.
If you are on a budget remember that portion sizes are much larger than here though, and it's perfectly acceptable for two people to share a main course.

I've just come back from NY & would say that you need to allow $70+ per day for all meals, depending on whether you have breakfast included in your holiday package or not. We didn't but as it was just my 16yr old dd & I we made do with Starbucks or similar for breakfast, & then ate a mixture of fast food/reasonable meals the rest of the time. Weather wise we had it hot (& I mean high 30's)but as the buildings are air conditioned I didn't find it too oppressive. Subway trains are air conditioned but the stations are hot!
It cost us $27 each to get a 7 day unlimited use MetroCard, definitely worth buying for getting around as valid on subway & buses. Be prepared for a lot of walking, need comfortable shoes. We bought, well dd did, a lot of clothes there as she wanted to stock up for 6th form college & found the prices to be good. But then she shops in places like Hollister .
