My mum wants to go with a friend at the end of September, wants nice hotel where they will be looked after but with things to do other than lie by the pool.

I haven't been for years ( and it was in January so my impressions may be wrong! ) but seem to remember Alcudia & Pollensa were nice? Also thought Palma was great but maybe not particularly relaxing for 2 old ladies for a week?

Soller is a nice quiet resort, with some nice hotels. Agree about Palma. Alcudia old town nice, not sure about the newer bits.

I like Puerto Pollensa, there are some good hotels close to the beach. DH and I have stayed at the Miramar, a 3 star, 80 bed family-owned hotel on the Pine Walk. Quite a "grown up" antique filled hotel, it has a private sunbed area on the beach for guests use, saving on sunbed/parasol charges! Local market, lots of good restaurants. Buses run to Pollensa village, and Alcudia, so worth going for day trips. (Pollensa village has quite a few steps in places, worth a mention. Puerto Pollensa is pretty flat.)

Puerto Pollensa has it's own website, giving lots of information, worth a read as it's very helpful.

that sounds exactly the sort of thing - thanks for that!

I second Puerto Pollensa and also Pollensa old town. Formenter is worth a visit.
Soller is also lovely and has a great atmosphere.
Deia is also a fab place but they would probably need car hire.

Pollensa nice. Alcudia is good for families with kids.

Palma?

Cala Bona on the east coast is a small resort but close enough to shops and attractions. The hotels Alicia or Levante are both fantastic. Levante is a thomson gold hotel so no kids.

Another vote for Puerto Pollensa. I think the resorts in the north, generally, are good - better, possibly, than those around Palma (though I have no experience of these). Soller was lovely to visit but haven't stayed there.
