Just found out this myself and saved loads.

Split your journey.

I travelled from Liverpool to Hull and was quoted £54 (and had to change at Leeds)
So instead, I bought a ticket from Liverpool to Leeds and then a ticket from Leeds to Hull and saved more than £20.

I always book mine via thetrainline.com, i too have a friends and family railcard and i have made some really cheap journeys.
I am in the east midlands and in dec last year we went to london return, thats 3 adults and 3 kids for £66 and last week 2 adults and 2 kids went to york return for £46.
