Where to stop off going from Cherbourg to La Rochelle over 3 days each way

We sail into Cherbourg on 29th, and don't have to be at our Eurocamp near La Rochelle until 1st.

Can anyone recommend a route, including charming characterful places to stay for two nights? I could do with two routes - one for the way there, one for the way back, as we are also spinning out the journey on the way back.

We are looking for something up mine and DH's street - perhaps a complete contrast to the Europcamp which will doubtless be full of Brits (we've never done it before!).

The DSs are 7 and a young 4 so any hotel needs to be reasonably relaxed, but a French B&B where we could practice our French a bit would be fab.

All tips gratefully received. Where would you stop off if you were making this journey?

In a straight line you only have around 5 1/2 hours of driving. I guess you are happy to go out of your way so her are a couple of suggestions:

Cherbourg to Josselin in southern Brittany = 3 1/2 hour drive.

Josselin has a very beautiful castle: www.chateaujosselin.fr/

For places to stay in/around Josselin try www.logisdefrance.com put Josselin in the search box and lots of choices will come up.

Josselin to Saumur in the Loire = 3 1/2 hour drive.

Saumur also has a very good castle: www.saumur-tourisme.net/chateausaumur.html

For places to stay again I would look at Logis as above.

Logis are normally family run hotels with a restaurant. You will be expected to use the restaurant. We have three DCs and find them very welcoming. You will need to book in advance.

Saumur to La Rochelle is 2 3/4 hours.

I hope you have a great holiday.
