End of the school year blues - anyone else?

Waaaah - I do this every year. I really look forward to the summer holidays, get all geared up for what we're going to do, then the last day of term hits and WHAM!

I feel all emotional and like my babies are growing up. Leaving a school year (years 1 & 3 for me this time) - it's all so final isn't it?

Yup.

My eldest goes to secondary school in september.

He has already informed me that I am not allowed to

a) wait for him outside school
b) kiss him
c) try to cuddle him
d) call him

Oh hecate, I'm terrible already, can't imagine what I'm gonna be like when they finish primary school for good!

I have to avoid looking at the Year 6 girls every July cos they all look so distraught!

Mine goes to uni, hundreds of miles away.

Our Y6 are a little scared, but mostly excited and full of hope.
It's OK, you'll get through it and so will they. It's lovely watching them grow up to be independent and still loveable, isn't it?

yeah am a bit [snif] about finishing year 1, they are all such lovely kids [wobble]

but then again i absolutely can't wait to take ds to buy a protractor set - i love them - and that's a few years ahead

MumInBeds · 21/07/2010 21:51

Oh yes, my ds is leaving Juniors to go to High school and my dd is moving from Infants to Juniors. I also said goodbye to my little ones at work (pre school) who are moving onto school next year.

I have two leavers assemblies tomorrow, I'm going to be very tearful.

deepdarkwood · 21/07/2010 21:53

Ds is going to be the big kid at school (Y2 and it's dd last year of nursery

MaureenMLove · 21/07/2010 21:56

I'm a little blue for a different reason!

I am a mother of one teenager and I am a school worker. DH can't get any time off and DD will be off having fun with her mates.

6 weeks is an awful long time, to spend most of it on your own. There is only so many times you can clean the house, especially as it doesn't get that untidy, with only one teenager! (Obviously I don't include her room in that! )

maktaitai · 21/07/2010 22:02

Maureen! My God! Surely there's something more fun you could do than cleaning the house!

Couldn't you... get a temp job and spend the money in August? volunteer with a playscheme? go and walk Offa's Dyke? buy a 'teach yourself' book and learn a new language/skill? do a holiday course?

I'm knackered!! Why on earth would I want a temp job!

maktaitai · 21/07/2010 22:25

fair enough

well then what's not to like about lying on the sofa for 6 weeks with a large pile of trashy novels??

HecateQueenOfWitches · 22/07/2010 06:38

herbie - what, outside the school in front of his mates?

estar · 22/07/2010 09:31

I was the same when I was at school tho. I couldn't wait for the summer holidays, used to count down to them, but then when they arrived I felt daunted by the whole prospect. Think it's the end of one thing but instead of going straight into something else, you've got this huge expanse of time..... stretching out in front of you.....and even though I make lots of plans I'm still not quite sure how we're going to fill it all

Maureen, maybe you should advertise yourself on here - 'Temporarily out of work for 6 weeks. Own family not messy enough. Will come and clean houses for free.'

That should cure any boredom!

Sames.

Thought I was ok this year but had a real wobble at the gate. Was going to effuse to the teacher about how wonderful she's been, but when I got there I was all emotional and just muttered something, took DS and was off!
