Venice with a toddler while PG?

DH is going to Venice for 9 days in September, we'd hoped that me and DD (will be 22 months) could go out and join him for 3-4 days. I'm now PG and will be just into the second trimester so hopefully not as knackered as I am at the moment!

Is Venice suitable for toddlers? DD loves walking and staircases so the bridges might not be too bad, I probably wouldn't take a buggy just a sling. Is it horrendously dangerous next to the canals? DH is busy every morning and afternoon, so I guess I'd probably be single-handed with DD. Any recommendations/ dis-recommendations? Would it just be mad to try and keep her safe with all the water around?! How is Venice as far as kids in restaurants goes? (we might be able to get a babysitter at the B&B one or two nights but not all)

(NB am off to playgroup so will be replying later, thanks )

I would hesitate to travel with such a young child, more so because of pregnancy.
Bear in mind you will have to lug a changing bag everywhere as well.
