we have a 1 year old and almost 3 year old, and would like to go to coast in south brittany in august (yes, this august, how does everyone else get their hols booked so early?).

can anyone recommend a lovely coastal town and nice beach and even better good self catering accomodation?

Hi, we live in Southern Brittany, near Vannes. Bit biased obviously, but I love it here! Loads of beaches, great for children of all ages - sorry to be pesimistic, but I wouldn't fancy your chances of getting self catering accomodation now - if there's anything left you have to ask why. We run a gite and are booked up now for August 2011! Have a look at our website for more info on the area though, and ask away if you want to know any more. Have you thought of camping?

Carnac is well worth a visit - old fashioned seaside town with an icecream shop with the most amazing range of flavours.

About booking early? We booked this August last August! We have 3 big DCs so need to get in early to get the accomodation during school holidays.

For accomodation with children we always go for mobile homes on campsites - great for pools, playgrounds etc.

wow jenpet your place looks fab! me may even think of booking it for next year, although we find it v v hard to book hols ahead- i think its a hangover from when we were footloose and did things almost on a whim.

Are the dates in white next year (beg june) still available?

suziehomemaker thanks too- can you recommend any campsites? I would def go for the mobilehome option as long as there was a town/ beach near by but i am too fond of comfort to properly camp!

Hi Kriss

We have stayed at Camping Les Menhirs in Carnac a couple of times. It has a good pool and is within walking distance of Carnac & beach. We have stayed with Eurocamp and were please with the accomodation. If you are prepared to go at the end of August there does seem to be some availability (I even saw a week at les Menhirs with Eurocamp) but you do need to get in there quickly.

It is worth phoning any of the camping companies (Eurocamp, Keycamp, Canvas etc) and telling them what you want. They are very knowledgeable.

Kriss, unless you're bound to school holidays (are you teachers?) I'd wait until September. We used to go to Brittany in June before ds started school, and it was lovely.

I'd stick to pre- or post- August for as long as you possibly can; the first year we were at just how much more the ferry cost us, for example.

Camping at Penboch is lovely. We stayed there last year, pool, palyground, good location, near Vannes and near Auray which is really really lovely with great woodland walks.

agree with comments about carnac - men du is one of our most favourite beaches anywhere. much nicer area than vendee and weather usually fine. auray and vannes are beautiful old places to visit
