Food Poisoning in Turkey

Hi there,

Am I just been a bit silly or is it true that you are more likely to get food poisoning in Turkey than you would in the Canaries or Portugal?

So many people I know seem to have been ill in Turkey. But I don't know if that is just unlucky.

I really fancy trying Turkey for a change but am pregnant and have three small children so need to be really careful. The resort we are looking at is Lykia World.

Thank you so much for any comments.

I have just come back from Turkey and none of us were ill and ate everything including salads and seafood, we had ice in our drinks too.

Turkish food is lovely.

Is this an all inclusive? That is where it seems to be more common to get food poisoning. Massive dining rooms, moutains of food on a buffet style which is not always taken away and replaced as oft as it should.

If self catering I think you would be safer.

I have been travelling to Turkey every year for the last 10 years, including 3 years when I was living there and have never been ill, neither have any of my friends and family who have been. My dd lived there until she was 18 months and never had an upset tummy either, I also spent most of my first pregnancy there too.

I agree with RedArsedBaboon, don't go AI unless you go 5* and pay a lot as the cheap AI hotels are the places you are likely to get food poisining.

Turkey is a great place for children as the Turkish people love kids. Everywhere is very child friendly and you will be really looked after there.

I agree, the airport prices would make anyone feel unwell - lol

I;ve been to Turkey and had no problems, however a 6 day holiday in Portugal resulted in a week off work and almost a hospital admission for food poisioning!

Horrific - ours was from piri piri chicken, was cooked fine but doctors reckon it was contaminated. Camplyobacter is not pleasant! Only plus side was we ate it the day we left so got home before we were both ill.
