Anyone know if when you leave Lisbon airport they check your passport or waive you through?

I know this sounds a bit weird, but I am travelling on holiday to Portugal in August, and just realised that my schengen visa (I am non UK) expires on the 11th August - I am booked to stay in Portugal until the 14th! I went today to go and get another visa and was told that I cannot renew or extend my visa until that one expires! To make matters worse my last visa was given to me by the french embassy which would mean that I would have to have that cancelled at the french embassy and then apply for a new one through the portuguese embassy and I am not sure i have time to do this!

So my options are either to hope that when leaving Lisbon airport there is no checking of passports or to change my flight!

The logical option is to probably just fly back on the 11th ...

Anyway does anyone regularly fly through the airport in Lisbon and can advise me!

They check your visa and passport - the airlines can be fined heavily if you don't have the correct documents and they let you on board

Thanks CMOT - i dont want the airline to be fined for my general incompetence! I was going to buy a return flight for the 11th, and see if i can try and extend my visa in Lisbon, and keep both flights as options .... that way when I entered portugal i would have a flight back for when i had to go ...
perhaps i am just making this difficult and will need to come home early and change all other bookings for car/accom .... boo hoo!
I know they check your visa/passport when you fly in .... but alot of airports i fly back from i cant even remember going through passport control!
