Lucy Worsley is a good sport but, to my tooth, she is becoming a bit of a parody of herself; The Sun newspaper made flesh.

I had to turn off her Radio 4 programme, Ladykillers as she really seemed to be taking the mick with her remarks, drawling out the word, 'murder' and lots of 'oohs and ahhhs.'

I much prefer Tracy Borman and Susannah Lipscomb who show more sensitivity to the people they are talking about, without being po faced.

I quite like Mary Beard.

Wishihadanalgorithm · 25/10/2026 23:04

I love David Olusoga. He explains things so clearly and carefully - I find him easy to follow and just really interesting.

likelysuspect · 25/10/2026 23:05

Very keen on Lucy Worsley, but love Dan Cruickshank, Simon Montefiore, Waldamar Januszack, both the Dans, love Mary Beard, Amanda Burchart

I even love David Starkey, you cannot beat his dramatic manner

Probably spelt a load of their names wrong. Sorry.

MyDenimKoala · 25/10/2026 23:07

David Olusoga for me.

ExOptimist · 25/10/2026 23:09

David Olusoga and Mary Beard.

AlexandraCarrington · 25/10/2026 23:16

I like Janina Ramirez. Not sure if she's done anything recently.

Alex Langlands and Peter Ginn, the two who did the Victorian Farm, Edwardian Farm etc.

The late Richard Holmes, military historian. Had a long career in the Territorials, as well as being an academic.

All professional, academic historians who don't let their egos get in the way of the story they're telling.

SnortCorner · 25/10/2026 23:16

I really like Lucy Worsley, Mary Beard, David Olusoga, Alice Roberts, Tracey Borman and Dan Snow. Can I also include the cast of CBBCs Horrible Histories? I watch it with my DS8 and it's fantastic!
I listen to a lot of history podcasts too and really enjoy listening to Greg Jenner, Kate Lister and Eleanor Janega.

Weirdpig · 25/10/2026 23:18

I really like Ruth Goodman. Probably because I find social history particularly interesting.

AlexandraCarrington · 25/10/2026 23:20

I even love David Starkey, you cannot beat his dramatic manner

I first saw him many years ago when C4 did a Trial of Richard III. He was a witness for the prosecution and was so obnoxious he virtually single-handedly secured a Not Guilty verdict.

Michael Wood

Mondaytuesdayhappydays · 25/10/2026 23:30

David Starkey hands down
Not only is his main area of study the Tudors (like mine) he is a working class hero.
Factory worker parents, Polio and club foot as a child, a homosexual at a time when it was illegal
Razor Sharp, unapologetic commentary on current affairs - phenomenal character

GobbolinoAndSootica · 25/10/2026 23:32

Mary Beard, David Olusoga, Suzannah Lipscomb

Though Lucy Worsley surprised me the other day in the Six Wives thing she did, by saying "hung, drawn and quartered" instead of "hanged, drawn and quartered". But I'll let her off, I'm gracious like that 😂

RaggedRocks · 25/10/2026 23:33

They are all good. Mary Beard, Lucy Worsley, Alice Roberts, Janina Ramirez. Dan Snow and his dad. Yep Ruth Goodman. Dan Cruickshank. Don't like David Olusoga, too obsessed with slavery.

AlexandraCarrington · 25/10/2026 23:36

Michael Wood

Oh yes I'd forgotten him.
But I did see him get something completely wrong about the 19th century once. He should have stuck to the Anglo Saxons.

madameimadam · 25/10/2026 23:47

Can I cheat and have podcast historians? I’ll have Tom Holland and Dominic Sandbrook from the Rest is History please. They talk so knowledgeably about so many aspects and areas of history - their amount of research for each episode is unbelievable.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 25/10/2026 23:48

Tracy Borman. I saw her theatre show last week and she was incredibly good.

Twogingercats · 25/10/2026 23:50

I feel Lucy Worsley has delighted us long enough.
Ruth Goodman is my favourite as I love social history, as a pp said, and she was lovely when I saw her at an event.

Gilead · 25/10/2026 23:54

Starkey is an arse, and a racist.
Adore Mary Beard. Went to a talk about Windrush by David Olosuga, really interesting, he’s great at holding the audience with a good story. Would love to see Mary Beard live too.

RaggedRocks · Yesterday 00:04

I went to a Janina Ramirez lecture. She was wearing massive platform boots, still looked really short, though. Fantastic speaker, I got to talk to her afterwards, was pleased with that.

MsKittyMarion · Yesterday 07:37

Suzanna Lipscomb, Kate Lister, Tracy Borman & Gareth Russell are my current favs. I used to love Eleanor Janega but she's become a bit of a cartoon of herself. It irks me that any Scottish Historical talks are always in the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh. Edinburgh is a pain to get to for me, 45 mins by car (no parking) and over two hours, and 3 changes, by train. Please, if any historian is reading this, consider Glasgow too 🙏

That was hilarious, when the defence brief addressed him as 'Mr' Starkey and was very snottily told 'actually it's Doctor Starkey."

Janina Ramirez, Simon Sebag Montefiore, James Fox for art history

I really like Ruth Goodman. Probably because I find social history particularly interesting.

Social history is my thing and I used to like her a lot but she has the most irritating grating laugh, she seems quite odd in terms of her social interactions and I just cant watch her now. Shame

Most historians have an area of interest, no is moaning about any of the other historians for being 'too obsessed with the Crimea/Tudors'

My issue with him is his delivery and tone, its like he is just about to announce you have cancer or something, so doom laden.

I love them, feel like they have been here for me through an awful few months. Their intellect, humour, presenting style, lovely friendship; I could listen to them all day.

I love the DS in Book Club too.
