GingerbreadFolk · 06/01/2010 18:50

Well done your ds.

Will he be having an 'our parents are addicted to MN and we survived it' meet-up with Riven's dd?

roisin · 06/01/2010 19:05

That's fab! Congratulations to him.

NotAnOtter · 06/01/2010 20:00

Oh good - pleased to hear it. I loved the look of his hair long.

Did he get his first choice college & is he now motivated to getting the grades he needs (presumably quite high)?

DuelingFanjo · 06/01/2010 21:04

well done, I thin Riven's Daughter did too

PandaG · 06/01/2010 21:06

oh i was about to post the same thank you! I hope you don't mind me butting in. My ds got his offer from cambridge this morning too, and I think i have the same people to thank.

you were all endlessly helpful - his school was very lame about the whole thing - I am so grateful

he didn't cut his hair either!

NotAnOtter · 06/01/2010 22:03

faustina fantastic and i could not agree more!

which college? what is he hoping to read?

salvolatile · 06/01/2010 22:04

Fantastic news!!!!!

faustina · 06/01/2010 22:06

King's, philosophy (nice useful subject eh?)

faustina · 06/01/2010 22:07

congratulations to your ds too notanotter. Mine didn't apply ANYWHERE else! It's been a terrifying few weeks

NotAnOtter · 06/01/2010 22:51

wow faustina he must have been very confident!

OP posts:
faustina · 07/01/2010 06:07

no! He wasn't at all. We had months of angst, and he almost didn't apply. Once he'd finished the angst though,, there were perhaps three days before the UCAS deadline, and he had made up his mind by then that the only thing he wanted to do was philosophy, and Cambridge was the only place he wanted to do it at.

Apparently, this year more people tried for oxford because they aren't asking for an a*. No-one from his school got an offer from them - so he got a lucky break there..

He thought he'd be turned down, and his plan was to reapply again next year. It was only in the last few weeks that he admitted I might have been right when I suggested he apply to other places too.

He came back from the interview saying he thought he had fluffed it, so it has truly been a nightmare since then.

NotAnOtter · 07/01/2010 11:17

faustina wow very single minded nd focused young man. ds college said this year was the first year they had rejected without interviews so i am not sure numbers are down although ds school very poor showing from oxford also..

ds is state though and local independant fared well at oxford - yet to hear cambs

up late last night swooning over architecture (me not him!)

Well done to your Ds notanotter.

CaptainNancy · 07/01/2010 13:19

Wow! Many congratulations to DS1! (And you and DP too of course)

faustina · 07/01/2010 14:42

yes he is very stubborn singleminded indeed.

I have also been looking at the lovely photographs, and laughing at the very comprehensive set of rules - it's a bit harry potter isn't it?

I think only one other got an offer at cambridge - DS is at a state school too. The saddest part is there are twins who applied, and I think only one got an offer. They're very competitive too. What a nightmare that must be : (

NotAnOtter · 07/01/2010 16:23

faustina that would be hard!

captain nancy thanks - i have given myself a virtual pat on the back dont you worry. Think dp might have patted his balls as genetically he is definitely his dad's son !
