IT training

Hi
Does anyone have any advice about IT training. I have a degree in sciences, worked in the public sector and then had a break while having DCs. I would like to retrain in IT, perhaps with a view to working in the public setor (I previously worked in clinical auditing). Does anyone have any ideas which courses/providers would be best? Is it best to get specific IT skills or do an IT degree/ masters? Is it pssible to study from home and do this before getting work experience?
Thanks v much for your help

IT is not a very family-friendly field, ime. I have plenty of qualifications, but rarely see any part-time or flexible work (granted, I don't look hard).

I'd look to the OU maybe for some qualifications ...
