We have signed up for the free Grammarly.
Is it okay to use this for university essays?

It depends on the university policy so you'd need to check. Where I work we allow It to a certain extent for checking spelling and grammar but too much and the individual writing style is affected.
Students can be accused of plagiarism/cheating if they try to get Grammarly to do the work for them. You still need to use your own ideas and do your own reading and research.
If we think you've used any form of AI to write it we call you in for a viva to discuss your ideas and how you wrote the essay. If you can't talk about the topic or how you approached the assignment, chances are you didn't do much of the work.
It always helps to save a few drafts of your work - initial plan, first draft, and then the final version after its been through Grammarly. We can then see that you haven't just submitted something generated by AI.

Check the university policy. Most are ok with basic spelling and grammar checkers like that.
