Starting up a new thread for anyone whose YP might be applying this autumn for entry next year!

Our DC has I think decided they’ll make an application (biology at Oxford). Look forward to sharing info and keeping each other somewhat sane through the process x

I’ve no idea how it all works (have an older dc but he was never going to apply to Oxbridge) so this is all new to me.

Hi, my daughter is going to apply for psychology, linguistics and philosophy at Oxford. Although I'm not really convinced Oxbridge is her scene.

Joining as well - ESAT booked yesterday and studying for it is well underway!

For those doing the ESAT, what prep are your DCs doing? Dd hasn’t started yet. She’s currently on a residential (back tonight) but it’s on her list to start next week.

Hello all. My eldest is wanting to do history at Cambridge. Not decided on college yet though - she went to the open day in July and managed to see Sidney Caius and Trinity. I think she’s going to go down again on 11th Sept to look at a few more as there is another Colleges open day then.

Thanks for creating this thread. DD1 wants to apply to Cambridge this autumn. The college she loves is one that says it often sets higher than standard offers for her course (eek!), which makes the whole thing feel even more unattainable, but she wants to give it a go.

DD is planning to apply for Engineering at Cambridge. ESAT is booked but very little done over the summer as far as I can tell. PS on second draft I think. She’s booked on the Colleges Open Day in Sept as missed the main open day.

We missed the main open day too so will be going to the one on the 11th.

DS will be applying to Oxford and his favourite college is Worcester. He's my oldest so first time navigating the process.

Twins here, both applying to Cambridge one for medicine the other for engineering. Personal statements currently both several thousand characters too long. UCAT done for Twin 1. Twin 2 is sitting esat then TMUA one after the other on consecutive days so that’s going to be fun!

Good morning! I will join too. DS1 has been to both Oxford and Cambridge open days. Currently favouring NatSci at Cambridge. ESAT is booked and he has been drafting his personal statement.

There is such a variety of students at both universities that I wouldn't worry about it being her scene or not. Everyone seems to find their people and she'll do the same.

I study History and German, so won't be too useful for STEM, but can provide insight into humanities or the more social side of things if anyone has concerns/questions about that!

Shame we have to decide whether or not to do an early application for Oxbridge before ESAT results are out.

For those considering Engineering, how are you deciding which colleges to visit on the 11th???

Hi, my son is applying for History at Cambridge. He visited with his school last term and is now keen to apply!

Dd applying for NatSci not engineering but she has made her colleges choices on:

1. Current staff there that fit her interests (acknowledging that this may change)

1. How many times a week the choir sings. Dd wants to apply for a college choir but not one that sings more than 3 times a week.

1. Vibes. This one is the most important apparently!

She has a favourite and we plan to go to that one and then one not on her list at all just in case she gets interviewed by somewhere different. At least then she will (hopefully) have seen first hand that all students think their college is the best one!

Joining as I have a DS applying to Cambridge for Maths. He has been to multiple open days, but still can't decide on which college to apply for! Personal statement done, TMUA booked, studying constantly. But needs to make a college decision! He has decided NOT Trinity, but no ideas beyond that.

@namechanged221 good to see another cambridge would be historian! My Dd wants to do history at cambridge too. She preferred it over the oxford course as she says you can do ancient history without having to do joint honours with ancient history.

I’m joining but am rubbish at keeping up with threads. DD applying for History at Oxford. She was leaning towards open application til we went to open day now would like Magdalen but that is the most popular college as far as I have read. It’s her absolute dream, and she is very into History and works very hard, I don’t think she could do more to better her chances so it’s a numbers game. She is very anxious though so I’m the one who needs to work on keeping a calm consistent home life while we go through the next few months. I’m somewhat dreading the possible long haul of interview(s). I’m certain that if she gets an offer she will make the grades but yes I know that too is open to chance affecting her next summer.

I'm finding the balance between supporting son to reach his dreams, but also knowing he's going for one of the most oversubscribed / popular courses in the country! I have no doubt that he will get the a-level results, but that's the easiest part! How do you support them 100% but also keep them realistic? And knowing if he gets an offer, he loses his second place and left with just his insurance!

I think it’s tricky. Dd has dreamt of going to Cambridge since she was about 14. She is however very pragmatic and knows that beyond a certain point, whether or not she gets an offer is a bit of a lottery.
I’ve encouraged her just to focus on what she can control - grades and super-curriculars. The rest is up to admissions. It’s fortunate that she’s seen a couple of older friends not get offers even though they were “perfect” on paper and who have gone on to have amazing times elsewhere so she knows it’s not the be all and end all.

I’m most concerned about interview as she could be quite reserved. But we’ll see how it goes.
