Bristol Uni Accommodation

DD has received her accommodation offer today - she applied grades in hand so def going.

The offer is for Riverside-Favell House which neither of us have heard of and obv wasn’t in her 3 preferred (Goldney and 2 halls at North Village). She’s self catering. Is anyone familiar with this hall? Shes pretty gutted and I’m worried. The letter says if you decline you need to arrange private rented accommodation which obv we don’t want.

I gather accomm at Bristol can be a bit of a lottery yes.

Blimey just looked at it – £8k+ for a shared bathroom. That's a lot. Still, it is what it is; accommodation in Br is at the top end ££ wise but I presume you were aware of that.

It looks nice tho and is in a very pleasant location, central to the city and near the harbour. Bit of an uphill hike to the uni but a hill in Bristol is fairly usual. Hope she enjoys her time there.

My DD in same position, got Favell too, despite Goldney and other city choices. tbh she was disappointed initially, & phoned to ask if she could swap (they said no) but now has looked at the info on the Bristol Uni website and is happy - it looks nice and great city location which is where she wanted to be. I always drummed into her that she may not get what she wants and it's the people that count, so she's going with it!

Thanks Clary. Yes I had heard accommodation was a headache but was hoping an unconditional offer might’ve put her in a slightly more favourable position with preferences but clearly not 🤣 Perhaps these halls will be okay.

I’m interesting. She emailed to ask to switch but sounds like that won’t be possible. In fairness the location does seem good. Only downside is the rooms don’t appear to have sinks? She had requested one.

Same, my DD thought having deferred she'd be in with a better chance of getting Goldney - but imo it's v popular as it looks all quaint and lovely, unlike Favell which looks a bit brutalist! Plus more students have likely requested city location as free buss pass for North Village is no longer offered. Think they won't let anyone swap - just too complicated for them. Needs to be confirmed in a day or 2, so email reply may not come before then.

I know Bristol well and although Favell looks a bit brutalist it's in a fantastic area of the city, actually one of the oldest parts. It's not a long walk to the uni from there and near loads of things. Your child will have a fabulous time. HTH

My DD was in Favell House for her first year. It’s in a great part of the city, her flatmates were fantastic (still sharing with most of them for her 3rd year). Bit of an uphill trek to lectures but Bristol is hilly. Think there were only 2 shower rooms for 6 of them it they all managed. Had the time of her life.
