MenB vaccinations

Just a reminder to you all that our YP can get MenB vaccinations on the NHS this summer before heading off to University. They can make an appointment here: Book a Men B vaccination

They need two doses so they need to book now for the first one.

Do they not do this at school? I’m in Aus and in my State (can’t speak for the others but I think all do it), MenB is given as a school based vax program, like all vaccines in the 11-18yo cohort.

Parents can choose to opt out, or get it done privately outside of the school setting. It leads to high rates of vaccination in this cohort as it’s made so easy for everyone, you just send them off to school and they come home vaccinated😁.

Just go add that this is for England. Other home nations have their own vaccination programmes planned. NI for instance haven’t updated yet to say when theirs will
be available but to keep an eye on the NI Direct website. Here’s the link for info for any other students/parents in NI.

All countries have different vaccination schedules so it's not a good idea to assume anything about another country's practices.

@HoppingPavlova this vaccine wasn't part of the schedule of secondary school vaccines in the UK (it is offered to infants) but there was an outbreak at a UK university last academic year and so now they are playing catchup. Not sure if they are planning to add it to the school vaccine schedule.

If you’re in Aus you probably haven’t seen that this has been all over the news in recent months that this particular vax isn’t don’t in school so best not to comment, with respect, as it may cause confusion.

No. The schools don’t. Children under 11 have had the vaccination offered at their GP, but this is only those who were born after September 2015.

Parents of children born before September 2015 need to be aware that their children aren’t vaccinated, and OP was correct to signpost them about how to get vaccinated. This is only available to those born in 2008 and before. I have a 2009 Sixth-Former and am interested because Sixth-Formers have sadly died, but unfortunately it’s not my DC’s turn yet.

We paid privately for our youngst MenB jab in Boots as she didn't fit the free vaccination ortografi in age.

We paid forcthe oldest two as they went to uni halls. All young people should have the offer free tbh.

We relocated to Scandinavian and they have little common knowledge of MenB vaccinations but fair enough also very few outbreaks.

The autorities were "Oh you have a MenB jab how extra ordinary" at the outbreak at the youngst's school in autumn. I had her vaccinations registrered at our GP on arrivial.
Her class had the jab as a precausion after a residential with an outbreak. Luckily the to affected girls in her class recovered well.

DS18 booked in for next Monday. Glad they are doing this as I would have paid privately for it.

Not assuming, was asking the question about how it was done in OP’s area as was interested as was done there. From what they wrote it seemed not in schools, HENCE I asked the question. Was no assumptions ……..

I’m guessing though that’s some reason to preclude me commenting that I find our school based vax system (which I specified was where I am located in Aus) convenient, and leads to high vax rates also. Hmm, fine, and sorry for being interested in how other areas do things (from a medico’s perspective).

Vaccinations are normally done at school but this Men B is a new one in response to recent outbreaks. Those being vaccinated have now all finished school.

That's unfair, she didn't assume anything, clearly said which country she was in and asked a reasonable question which has now been answered by several of us.

Anyone else having their appointments cancelled? Have just booked for the 3rd time this week after the previous 2 appointments were cancelled. Wonder if demand is more than expected 🤔

NI roll out begins 31st July. At the minute there are no further details about how to get the vaccines but they have said it will be a multi-agency response so through GPs, I think pharmacies, possibly hospital hubs and also potentially on uni campuses too.

If we can’t get an appointment for the first dose by mid July then we will have to go private because DD is going away for uni so needs to get both doses before she leaves, unlike local students who could get their second one into the start of term.

Mind you, I suspect that private providers may have an issue with stock. DD was previously booked in to get hers before the outbreak (around March/April time I think) and we had booked that well in advance. Then the outbreak in Kent happened and Boots cancelled her appointment because all their stock of the vaccine was being sent to England. If folk in England are already having appointments cancelled due to stock issues then this doesn’t bode well to have the entire cohort vaccinated before heading off to uni in September.

Why aren't they offering this to YP in 2nd & 3rd year of university?

No, the MenB vaccine was only available privately until now. There have been clusters of infection & sadly deaths in recent months so an NHS vaccination programme has just been launched for those children who are about to start University. It’s too late to offer a school-based scheme for this cohort so a system of drop-in clinics & pharmacy appointments has been created. I presume the vaccine will eventually be offered through schools as most are in the U.K.

DD is booked in at our local Tesco pharmacy, which is near her gym, so she's very pleased about the covenience and how it fits into her social life very nicely!

Apparently they want to prioritise students in halls, who tend to be Y1.

Yes ours was booked for this Monday, and just got cancelled as they didn’t have enough of the vaccine in yet. It was the first day we could book for, so presumably it hasn’t arrived yet??

V annoying but had to rebook for a couple of weeks later after he’s back from holiday.

DD is starting uni in September but staying at home. We've had a text about booking her injection. Does she still need it or is it only for those staying in halls or at uni?

If she’s going to mix and socialise with other students she should get it done.

School is only compulsory until age 16.

16 - 18 year olds are supposed to be in education, training or employment. That can be a VI form at a school but not all schools have a VI form.
