How much money for maintenance Bristol ?

DD will be starting at Bristol University in September. How much money will she need for maintenance, decent lifestyle.

When do we pay uni fees? One payment or Instalments.

And how is the rent paid?

She has saved quite as took a gap year; said she will look for a job; but she will be doing Engineering and not sure how realistic is this.

If your Dd isn’t a big eater and you’re trying to save money, it’s cheaper to use the maintenance loan to pay their rent (with a top up from you, unless you’re very lucky and they’re going somewhere dirt cheap where rent is under 5k per year) and then give a weekly amount for them to live off. (I realise you said grandparents are helping, but for anyone else reading who this might apply to)
it works out cheaper usually - my Dd doesn’t eat much so I give her £75 a week term time, and then paid an extra 2.5k halls rent for year 1. This came in at 5k from me this year, and she could live happlly on that (she has a job too in both uni city and at home) - if we had paid all the rent and she lived off the maintenance loan, we would have spent 2.5k more - also she doesn’t need nearly 5k a year to live off! £150 ish a week (which is roughly what that would work out to) is quite a lot - if you can do food for £35 like she can, the rest is just for spends. Which is fine if they are earning it themselves, but I refuse to pay roughly £100 a week for drink and buying clothes when I don’t have that much myself each month! I want her to learn how to budget and earn her own money while she’s there.

My son has just finished first year at Bristol. He was in Goldney self catering which was not cheap about £9k for the year. We paid his rent and am doing so now he is in private rented. He gets minimum maintenance which works out about £120 a week. Which he managed on - we paid for extras like decent cofffee and train fares plus he had savings from work in holidays if wanted to spend more but actually the £120 was doable
