I’m really bored of it.
I did the open day rounds with DD a couple of years ago when she was looking at a science subject. The subject itself was largely untainted as far as the content was concerned but the open days were heavy on the environment; understandable but also not necessarily relevant to all teaching in this subject. The talks from students were excruciating; nerdy kids talking about how they do drag etc and so many LGBTQIA+++ flags and signs everywhere. This was tolerable because it wasn’t affecting the actual course.
This year we’re looking at PPE (etc) for DS and obviously there’s so much scope for total capture, but I was really shocked by Bristol. The course leader was a Green Party fan boy, he explained what critical thinking was and demonstrated he doesn’t know what critical thinking is or how to do it. He explained that as well as teaching about politics students would taught how to make a difference in the real world. This is activist school. They can learn thus on Twitter.
If I was an employer, I think I’d be wary of employing a PPE graduate from Bristol. What I saw indicated that students would be indoctrinated rather than educated. It’s depressing, it’s expensive and it’s low quality.
Warwick was a completely different ballgame; very high calibre.

lol at how condescending some of you are without having much of a clue what you are talking about.
Anyway, as you were. I’m done with the silliness.

Good on you - it's not worth trying to reason with these woke left wingers. They never listen to reason or views, just their own. I'm so glad my DD and all of her friend groups are not like that, even the one doing politics. My DD has crossed a few unis off of her list due to exactly what your original post said.

@SadiraOfTyr They are one of few to give tarrif discounts by school attended. They have a list and it’s fairly generous in its interpretation because many schools are not in deprived areas. So it’s not just about individual deprivation either.

Interesting. I found the list of schools and colleges that they give contextual offers to. Which do you think should not be on the list?

I find it interesting as all my interactions with Bristol have led me to believe it has an overabundance of honking raahs and rugger buggers.

And I am Marie of Romania.

Hello Maria, tell me them - which do academics prioritise; publications or intellectual property? Would you keep your research secret and not talk about it or publish any papers, put an embargo on your thesis just in case the university sees potential for money out of it? It simply wouldn’t occur to academics not to turn up at a conference with a poster or a paper because unlike in the real world publications are king. Publications are what drives research - whereas in the real world money is king and intellectual property and business interests are carefully protected. It is one reason universities only manage to spin off a fraction of commercial businesses they potentially could. Most academics live in a world where resources (research) are shared and paid for out of the public purse. That is not the real world inhabited by businesses or non-public sector employees.

OeufsalaCanicule · 30/06/2026 23:41

You explain what this ‘real world’ you think universities don’t inhabit is. Because it’s really not clear from this other than some handwaving about ‘businesses’ and ‘money being king’.

School and catchment in Polar Quintile 4 and ACORN Comfortably off and Wealthy achievers and all our students qualify for a Bristol contextual offer.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 01/07/2026 14:24

@CatsicumYes, I’m not surprised but Bristol with lots of low offers isn’t leaping up the rankings. It’s dropped a lot since DD went there.

How about Cardinal Newman in Hove? All the kids o know who go live in houses worth a minimum of £700k

It's not on the list for current admissions (it was on the 2026 list though). Apparently 22% of pupils are on free school meals so I highly doubt that all of them are in 700k houses.

So anyone who does not work for a profit-driven enterprise is not living in the 'real world'? What an odd viewpoint.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 01/07/2026 16:37

@SadiraOfTyr Are you always so offensive about other people’s dc? My dd went there and was privately educated. Such a tiny minority might be a bit loud but most are diligent workers and nice people. Do you have to be so rude and divisive? Exeter, Imperial, LSE, Oxbridge, Durham, Edinburgh and UCL have more and Bristol is about the same as Newcastle. Happy now?

Rahs and rugger buggers can take it, they don't need you to defend them. Spare me the 'other people's DC' nonsense, I'm talking about adults not children. And I didn't even mention private education.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 01/07/2026 16:55

@SadiraOfTyr You didn’t need to and would you like it if I categorized your dc in such a way? Try growing up.

Interestingly I looked at a couple of schools in. Bucks. I attach the catchment area for The Chalfonts Community College - you will see it covers Gerrards Cross. You would barely get a flat there for £700,000! Next catchment over, The Beaconsfield School has a catchment of Beaconsfield. Take a look on Rightmove and check out property prices!

Why are you posting maps of random schools in Buckinghamshire and what does that have to do with me saying mean things about ‘children’?

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 01/07/2026 18:55

Because we were talking about Bristol university before you started being rude about dc who went there! This is about their policy of schools attended and sc get lower tarrif and we talked about house costs. Do keep up and maybe don’t derail by nasty comments!

Fair, but I live on a ( fairly long) street with 5 Cardinal Newman pupils and the houses here are more than that. The 22% is undoubtedly true but at least another 22% have very much above national average incomes.

HPFA · 06/07/2026 12:54

My cousin always claimed he got rejected from Oxford because he was too right wing in the interview with a left wing don.

This would have been back in the early eighties - some things don't chnage much.

Piggywaspushed · 27/06/2026 19:03

You seem just as ideological as the no doubt highly intelligent and educated university staff you deride . You just want your ideology to be the right one and theirs to be the wrong one. Your DD is the one going. You sound like you are a bit over invested.

Bristol ahs always been known for left wing politics. Warwick has always been more staid and conventional (although I'd advise you to steer clear of its film department!). Both are excellent, top calibre universities.

This. Why are you so involved? It's weird. It's none of your business, it's your DD choice. I didn't even know parents went to open days, mine never did.

I would guess almost all the kids in the posh bit of the catchment are in the Bucks grammars or private.

IdasFlowers · 06/07/2026 13:04

The University of Bristol operates a Contextual Offers scheme that reduces standard A-level entry requirements by up to two grades. Historically, this policy has included automatic consideration for students who attended a state school or college in the lowest-performing 40% nationally based on A-level attainment.
(Cut and paste)

IdasFlowers · 06/07/2026 13:05

There's a Comp near me that doesn't get contextual offers as not in the bottom 40% for A level results

RampantIvy · 06/07/2026 13:39

@Peonies12 Times have changed since you went. DD didn't want to go on her own and couldn't in many cases as some of the universities required an overnight stay that DD being only 16 and 17 wasn't able to do so.

Also weekly Saturday train strikes meant that I had to drive her.

Only on MN are parents expected not to provide guidance or support to their children
