BUCS- Climbing

Does anyone’s DC have experience of being part of the BUCS climbing teams at Uni of Sheffield, Uni of Notts or Uni of Birmingham?
DS is applying for 2027 uni entry. Will there be BUCS reps at open days?

No experience of BUCS climbing as such but quite a bit of exp of BUCS in other sports :)

There will probably be at least someone from the athletic union or whatever the unis call the body that has oversight of its sports clubs at an open day. If that's what you mean by BUCS reps? (or do you mean someone from BUCS itself, as in the organisation? in which case I doubt it).

Presuming you mean indoor climbing (don't think there is a BUCS outdoor comp) I imagine they will be keen to have anyone with experience. Glancing at the men's results from last year Brum and Sheffield both had someone in the top 10 and Nottingham in the top 50.

There were a good number of competitors from Sheffielld (and Sheffield Hallam) which is not astonishing considering where Sheffield is; but the other two unis you mention were not very well represented so I would imagine it would not be so very difficult to make the team. You could ask at the open day tho.

@clary thank you! Yes, I wasn’t very clear- I meant whoever at the uni who deals with the comps. I don’t really know what I’m talking about 😄- just thought I’d start to try and find out.
Thank you for replying.

There may be reps of specific sports clubs at open day but tbh I doubt it. That's more of a thing for freshers tbh. But you can ask whoever is there as a sports rep about if there is a climbing club. For sure there will be one at Sheffield.

Is your concern whether DS will get into the team or more around what it will involve?

It’s a task for DS at freshers marketplace btw unless the chance of being in the BUCS team will sway his choice of uni.

BUCS orienteering and kayaking more my forte

For minor sports you sometimes have to hunt them out

HostaCentral · 27/03/2026 14:41

University of Sheffield Mountaneering Club. University of Nottingham Climbing Club. University of Birmingham Mountaneering and Climbing Club.

All have Facebook, Instagram, and University information sites. They all seem to compete in Varisties, and BUCS. Get your DC to message them direct on the club pages for any questions they have.

As others have said, if the choice of Uni is dependent on something crucial in climbing, it won't be during an open day, so message soon!

@HostaCentral thank you ☺️

If you download the BUCS app you can search for sports and hence see which unis have done well. We did this for another minor sport and established, for example, that there were 4 teams for each gender at the prospect uni, and that they were in leagues as well as cup events in their area. Hence knowing it would be active. Then found the club on instagram and saw that they invited freshers to preseason training and DC got in touch.

I’ve lectured at a few different universities including two of the three you’ve mentioned, I have never seen a representative of specific clubs at an open day or an offer holder day.
