Yes home and international student numbers are fixed for medicine. There are actually very few international places compared to
other subjects.

So does this mean that students who are waitlisted have not been overlooked in favour of international students through clearing? I thought perhaps universities might be preferring international students over home students as the fees are so much higher so more “profitable”.

They are separate categories and places cannot shift between them. Generally universities like to attract as many international students as possible but they are not allowed to do this with medicine - in no small part because there has to be space for medical students to be taught within the nhs.

Thank you for clarifying that. I’d noticed that university of Lancashire have opened up clearing only for international students too.

Sachetaandb · 12/08/2026 23:20

At Scottish universities the Scottish student places are also a separate category to the rest of the UK

That's because of the difference in funding and the limits on Scottish students.

Morning,

Just checking in ahead of the big reveals. DD in bed, hopefully asleep as she struggled to get to sleep last night. I have woken at stupid o clock and got up to do some jobs to keep occupied. Hope everyone is ok and I look forward to seeing how our YP have all done as the day goes on.

Fingers crossed for them all and solidarity to us parents whilst supporting them 🍀.

Imperial place confirmed. I cried. My mum died of cancer in December. She was desperate to see him become a doctor. He was so lovely with her and so caring. She'll be part of the doctor he becomes.

I am so sorry. It's such a horrific process.

inae · 13/08/2026 09:29

Congrats @everydirection ! Very glad for you and your YP! It was extra tough for you all..

Firm choice confirmed here too for DD, she will be a Sheffield med student. We are over the moon and so so relieved... This has been a tough journey. I don't know why I didn't take the day off, I'm unable to focus.

So sorry @Katyapup ! It's a very tough process. Wishing your YP strength and I trust they will find a good way forward.

Randomactofkindness · 13/08/2026 09:40

@inae congrats to your DD! Mine is just about to start 3rd year at Sheffield on Monday - 1st placement - if yours has any questions let me
know!

bluefineliner · 13/08/2026 09:52

DD got in Newcastle with 3 x A stars! Never expected that but over the moon.

@Katyapup I'm sorry your DD is disappointed after such a long draining application. Hope she can find the best way forward once she has processed things.

So so relieved here, it has been very stressful for the whole year really but we couldn't have asked for a better outcome. Thanks for all the support from you guys on here, the only ones who know exactly how it is.

So sorry @Katyapup , this process is brutal.

PurryGrowls · 13/08/2026 10:30

So sorry @Katyapup The process is totally brutal and I’m sure you know your daughter has done incredibly well to come this far. Makes it all the harder to stumble at the last hurdle, but once she’s processed stuff, hopefully she can pick herself up and decide the best way forward. Big hugs.

PurryGrowls · 13/08/2026 10:35

Very relieved my daughter has achieved her first-choice place at Lancaster, really excited for her.
Congrats all - a year ago we were deliberating UCAT strategies so it’s been a long road!

W0tnow · 13/08/2026 10:51

Just popped in to say hello and best wishes to all today. I’ve been where you are! My daughter is starting 3rd year at Exeter. She’s been in Cornwall since second year. Loving it.

Congratulations to her! I'm a Lancaster graduate (not medicine) - which college has she asked for? I was Bowland!

mumsneedwine · 13/08/2026 11:04

🥰🥂 for those with good news. If it's not as hoped then take some time to process. It's a tough tough time.

aintnothinbutagstring · 13/08/2026 11:23

Dd got AAA with school applying for remark in Biology as she was 1 mark off A*. She has a place at Sheffield but her firm was UCL who rejected her. She phoned them to advise of remark (priority remark school will apply for) but they were quite dismissive and just said check clearing until she gets the remark. I'm sure all these schools can afford to be dismissive anyway. We are happy with everything though - it has been a long road with UCAT and interviews, 2 rejections from her other choices.

Mmmm. Unfortunately UCL can be a little 'rude'. If still interested in going then put it in writing to admissions about remark and ask for offer to be held open for 5 days. You might get a 'nicer' response (it won't be in clearing !).
Personally, I prefer Sheffield 🤪

Ah thanks for the advice mumneedswine. DD is in quite a quandary at the moment over her choices. She really didn't expect to get an A in maths (was the edexcel one). Sheffield were very lovely and welcoming when she did her interview - though she was slightly put off by the weather as it was a very rainy, cold day in February 😄So didn't see the city in it's best form.

MyGreyBiscuit · 13/08/2026 11:51

hello!!! So pleased to see everyone's good news. @Katyapup - so so sorry, will you be able to get some remarked? or reviewed??

We were so nervous, and so relieved, DS got his first choice, Queen Mary! :)
