notsoperfect33 · 02/03/2026 20:04

Great news, congtrats @bluefineliner and @MyGreyBiscuit!

YP got an offer from Leceister, just Southampton to go now. We have Birmingham Offer holders day on Saturday. YP is worried about some of the stories of it being a bit of a pressure cooker environment with not great support. Anyone have any experience with the med school? She does really like it.

I think people our age who are doctors/dentists got into med/dent schools without this many layers of exams - UCAT/MMIs etc. Obviously they had to do really well in their national exams (A levels etc) but that was probably it. Many didn't have to also be Olympaid champ, Head prefect, volunteering and working at the same time. Obviously this is a matter of demand/supply with the supply end being outstripped by demand. So universities have to go through a whole rigmarole of tests and evaluations to select 'the best' suited individual for the course.

I think there are a few questions here - one, does the process have to be so different for every school (I guess if we want a diverse pool of doctors then there'll need to be a diverse range of skills)? two, can't the schools be more consistent in the way they inform the students (ie. stop making those drip feeding offers for the top 10% of students and just make it uniform). three, is that the 'best' way of selection?

Someone shared an analogy that I found quite helpful... If teachers returned assessed work as and when they marked them... then surely it'll stress the students out... not knowing if Bob got it first because Bob was the highest scorer or not?? (more often than not, it's because teachers are just marking what's on the top of the pile)...

I think there's so many very bright teens competing for places that, particularly if you go to a selective school, there is a feeling that you need to be top at everything but that's not actually the case (DD has this wobble as well). I think it's really important that there are multiple routes into medicine so we do get the diversity needed. We want people who are maybe not quite so strong on paper but have care experience and speak with working class accents and are really good with people.

FruAashild · 03/03/2026 08:01

Also, congrats to all the DC with new offers and fingers crossed for those waiting to hear from the tardy universities.

mumsneedwine · 03/03/2026 08:10

You really don't need lots of extra stuff - but unfortunately some schools tell kids they do. Most Unis only look at UCAT and grades. Yes you need to be able to talk about stuff but doing the MOOCS or having a job are just as useful. I wish the pressure was taken off for all these extra curricula's that are nice but not useful except for a v few Unis.

Hang in there if still waiting. Offers have been earlier this year than last 5 ! Good luck.

MyGreyBiscuit · 03/03/2026 08:17

Thank you everyone @Curlyshabtree @GrinsteadGrinch @PurryGrowls @Itsallstressstressstress @notsoperfect33 @Ceruleanmoon @inae @HelenofSparta ! Had a good night's sleep!! :)

@inae - back on the waiting step with you, my friend!!! and @Tsuipen - as many have said here, only need one. Fingers tightly crossed.

for sure! I definitely think it so important to have diverse skillsets... I think I was more talking about the different expectations for these 16/17 year olds, and also alongside the A levels and other things that children this age do, including socialising, learning to drive, earning some money etc. But... I think all our children have managed that and more so fingers crossed they get what they need to continue on this journey.

Dd went through this process a few years back - only had one offer by results day - she now has an honorary contract teaching at the medical schools she was rejected from pre interview.
Her friend got her place on A level results day by calling round medical schools.
