I would like to, in time when my kids are at school, like to work in an office environment ie clerical, stock control, reception.
All the adverts for these sorts of positions state that you need to be "computer literate,IT skills or ICT skills and knowledge of word and excel.
What is IT and ICT pls?
What would be the best course at college to do so that I can apply for these sorts of jobs?

IT - Information Technology, ICT - information Communication technology. Same thing really. I hear the ECDL is good - European Computer Driving License - but think you have to know your stuff a bit before taking that one so maybe some kind of beginner or refresher course. I think you can do it through your local council. But I'm no expert!

Look for ones with Office packages - Word, Excel , Powerpoint, maybe Access, as a start then you can try to familiarise yourself with the more specialist ones if relevant or offer to train while working. You could speak to a local temp agency to ask what is most in demand.

Anyone know the name of any specific courses?

To do ECDL you need to have quite a bit of basic knowledge. CLAIT is a more basic/starter course or even start with a basic word processing qualification

Try speaking to learn direct they have loads of courses, or speak to your local adult education office (look on council website)

I'm currently doing the ECDL. So far I haven't got very far. I've had a look at some of the revision I have to do but thats as far as I have got. Its a 12 month course with about 7 exams to take.
If you plan your time, its quite easy to fit in. I however am terrible at organising my time and keep on taking more and more things on at the same time.
Its meant to be a very good qualification to have which is why I will complete it as some point!
