For those whose DC have submitted their UCAS application without having yet taken the A-level (or equivalent) exams…

How are your DC getting on with hearing back from the universities?

Wow! I’ve never heard of such an offer. Does your child have an outstanding talent eg sports or performing arts which has triggered a bursary? Such an offer really does put pressure on the decision making process. Best of luck.

No not really, she does have a medical condition but no amazing talent. She’s just an average student.

Fabfabfab · 17/02/2026 08:45

@Kathyparr that sounds fantastic! What University is it? Do you think she will go for it?
@Rumplestiltz great news to get the Durham offer! What subject is it for and is it your DC's top choice?

DD got a reduced offer today compared to an offer she already had from that uni. They have also detailed that tuition for the whole course is free!! Is that a massive red flag? Anybody else’s DC had this? I feel like the course must be undersubscribed?

WOW, amazing and congratulations to your DC 👏👏. I have never heard of this before.
What subject? And, will your DC firm this offer?

CautiousLurker2 · 17/02/2026 09:29

@Kathyparr just wow. We’d be happy with a reduced - and even an unconditional - offer but lie others I am over the moon for your child that they have a free tuition award. Will that make it really hard to decide on where to go now as a degree with £30k less debt at the end is a huge incentive if it wasn’t her first choice originally?

i can see why it's unnerving, never heard of free tuition without having applied for scholarships etc. But then giving away places wouldn't solve the problem of being undersubscribed so not sure what's behind it. If you google it, do other examples come up of people having offers like that? Presumably it's a decent/legit uni if she's applied for it already and wanted to go there. Was it her first choice? Are there any strings attached to the free offer, like having to firm it?

Rumplestiltz · 17/02/2026 10:57

The free tuition is so interesting. I wonder if some universities are going to start making their money through accommodation rather than tuition fees? On another thread (or this one) someone was paying more than 300 pounds a week for shared halls in Bristol.

Kathyparr · 17/02/2026 10:57

Thank you for the replies. It’s a business degree at University of Manchester. It has to be her firm choice which it wasn’t going to be before this curve ball.

Well that's a more than legit uni so nothing to be worried about I shouldn't think. The only issue is if she wouldn't have firmed it anyway, which sounds like the case, so when she's got all her offers she can weigh up her preferences and factor in the no fee, see how that stacks up against other pro's and cons.

Llangewydd57 · 17/02/2026 11:32

A massive well done again to your DC @Kathyparr .

Rumplestiltz · 17/02/2026 11:34

Hamsterdamn · 17/02/2026 11:02

This looks like it is just about charging home fees for asylum seekers though, not complete waiver

Kathyparr · 17/02/2026 11:40

I’ve looked at their scholarships and none of them seem to apply to her situation. Looks like a trip to Manchester is in the cards for us.

I’d suggest you contact them asap to double-check,mistakes do happen. Manchester does offer a couple of fantastic full tuition fees scholarships but these are for black British students from low income backgrounds .

I’m accompanying my son to an offer holder day at Manchester tomorrow. If I have the chance to speak to anyone from Admissions I’ll ask in a general way about this type of incentivised offer.

Kathyparr · 17/02/2026 16:51

Thank you all for the comments. We did send an email to the admissions office today and it was a mistake. Gutted but then it means we can return back to plan A.

Llangewydd57 · 17/02/2026 17:44

Oh no @Kathyparr!
Good job you queried it before you firmed them.

Hamsterdamn · 17/02/2026 18:09

Wow, @Kathyparr how disappointing.

Blueskiesnotgrey · 17/02/2026 19:00

That's quite a mistake .. not that confidence inspiring!

Is anyone thinking about firming University of Nottingham? DS is keen but im a little.concerned about the financial measures.

Cosmoflo · 17/02/2026 22:37

Has anybody been invited to an offer holder day for Engineering at Manchester? We have had no info about one, have emailed admissions about it but have had no response. Not sure if they have one for Engineering or not?

They aren’t having OHDs for compsci. Only for widening participation students. Something about limited capacity, which isn’t great as other unis manage it. But might be different for other departments.

Dd was rejected from Durham,no drama it was a long shot. So was waiting on Newcastle which was her favourite. And today they made her an offer! She was applying with grades in hand so that’s all set. Absolutely thrilled! This is for English.

Cosmoflo · 18/02/2026 07:23

Ahh! Obviously no OHD’s for Engineering either. Like you say not great! 🤨

mumonthehill · 18/02/2026 08:26

@Kateplaysrugbyinmydreams how exciting and makes me hopeful we might hear from Durham and Newcastle soon as well.

Llangewydd57 · 18/02/2026 08:41

Congratulations to your DD on getting Newcastle @Kateplaysrugbyinmydreams 👏👏
