Suspended Course

My DC applied early for Oxbridge deadlines, and filled in all five choices. One of the unis she applied for has now suspended her course and will not offer it next year.

I assume it's possible for her to remove that choice from UCAS and select a new option, but I'm not sure how. Do we need to contact UCAS directly or will the suspended course be automatically removed, leaving a vacancy for her to fill? How much time does she have to choose?

Nottingham? Should be able to replace it. Theres a Nottingham thread already which you might find useful?

I asked there, but that comment kind of got buried. And I saw people discussing how other unis were considering suspending certain courses, so I thought it may be useful for others as well to face the information to hand.

And yes, Nottingham. It's a shame. I don't think she was particularly attached to the idea of going there, but it's such a beautiful campus.

This happened to my dd last year. One of her courses was bumped off by the university. She put another choice in on her UCAS after the UCAS deadline. She found out from her UCAS application that the course was not going to run.

I don’t know exactly what she did to add a replacement choice on the ucas but it can’t have been complicated becoming I imagine I would have heard alllll about it if it had been.

Good to know, TYVM!

Adding new choices will be via UCAS Extra - UCAS should remove the Nottingham course. Your school UCAS adviser should know about this or be able to contact someone but they are quite good at getting back to students themselves who enquire via phone/ the website. Bet they are getting loads !

Such a shame about Nottingham.

This is what UCAS says about withdrawn courses:

https://www.ucas.com/applying/after-you-apply/tracking-your-ucas-application/if-your-undergraduate-course-withdrawn

I’d be surprised if you had to use UCAS Extra because 1. Extra doesn’t open until 26 Feb 2026 and 2. you can’t use Extra if you have any other offers.

People on the current Y13 thread are saying (re Nottingham) that it’s straightforward to put in a new choice instead of the withdrawn course at this early stage. The UCAS page could be clearer on the exact mechanism!

If your undergraduate course is withdrawn | UCAS

Occasionally, it's necessary for universities and colleges to withdraw courses after you've been made an offer, or even after you've accepted an offer.

OK, I stand corrected! My DS had to use Extra 3 years ago to add extra choices on top of his three originals. Maybe that's changed.

HighburyHope · 07/11/2025 17:31

@temperedolive Has your DD received any message by email or in the UCAS Hub about the withdrawal of the course (either from Nottingham or from UCAS)?

No, not yet. But once she heard she went to the UCAS coordinator at her school, who confirmed it is suspended.

I agree, thr mechanism doesn't seem to be in place for this exact situation. But DC is fairly proactive, so she's made an appointment with her school's UCAS person for next week to sort it out. There are a couplenof courses at Manchester that she thinks might appeal, and she'll spend the weekend looking for anything she may have missed the first time around.
