The people who get into Russell group unis in clearing tend to be bright students who have underperformed at A level eg due to MH issues and this was also the case 30 years ago. One also needs to bear in mind that there was a vast difference in the school experience people had during the lockdown years and this will definitely have affected A level results in the past few years. Whilst A level results are a guide they are not the sole indicator of academic success at uni.

That’s the most ludicrous nonsense I’ve ever seen on a HE thread and it’s a pretty high bar.

League table are interesting but I’d definitely look at it by course too, though there are an anomalies there (Cambridge and Oxford rank top for Sociology but neither offer it as an undergraduate degree, for example).
I didn’t know what RG meant til a friend said her son was going to Sheffield ‘at least he got in to an RG uni’. I don’t think it factored in to my DD’s decision at all, though she was only interested in unis that appeared consistently in the top ten across the various tables as she wanted a tough academic course.

Cambridge has sociology at undergraduate in its HSPS degree.

Schools tend to give % to RG but honestly there’s around 4 others that everyone knows didn’t join RG but do their own marketing and are strong popular research universities. They are not back numbers struggling against the odds! They are either long established (StA) and monied or plate glass and didn’t follow Warwick into RG but have greatly eclipsed Essex and Keele! All unis market hard and the idea that non RG doesn’t do it and are succeeding against the odds is laughable.
