not sure if anyone can help. i’m a single parent and my son got the full maintenance loan based on my income going to university in Brighton
my daughter has just been offered Edinburgh uni A*AA and is really keen to go. would she still receive full maintenance loan even though uni in Scotland and it’s a 4 year course. sorry just a bit confused how it works and they are first generation to go to uni from a state school 🥴 don’t want to dash her dreams as she’s worked so hard. Durham is her second choice just not sure which to put first and whether student finance covers university’s in scotland.i work 40 hours a week but not a massive salary. any help much appreciated

Yes you'll still get funding for a Scottish university, and yes it will cover the 4 years. Edinburgh has a reputation of being fairly pricy for private rental accommodation though; I am not sure about Durham.

SFE does cover students at uni in Scotland, and your daughter will get the maintenance loan too x

Your children have expensive tastes - Brighton and Edinburgh are both expensive for accommodation

She has a job and is saving hard to be able to go. Thank you for your help it’s much appreciated! xxx

they both work a lot of hours at the same pub and are very careful with money.

So is Brighton though so at least it’s not going to be a total shock. One of mine is in her final year at Newcastle and her halls were £4800 but the halls where dd is going are £12000.

There are cheaper options in Edinburgh if you are able to compromise. My DD chose cheap self catering halls in 1st year, worked as RA in 2nd/3rd year (reduced priced uni accommodation) and in her final year lives in a 4th floor flat in a noisy area (£475pm + bills). There is cheap student coop housing too if you can get a room. Flats thru the unis estate agency Domus tend to be cheaper too (again if you can get one)

Plenty of part time work in Edinburgh particularly at Xmas and the summer.

My DD has loved it.

wow £12k! where is that? Tell me there are also cheaper options?

Edinburgh uni halls start under £6k less if you share but there are some really £££ ones.
