Edinburgh Napier accommodation?

I’ve tried posting this on Scotsnet, but not got anywhere so I thought I’d try here

DD has a conditional offer to study at Napier this year. We were at the open day yesterday and got to see the accommodation at Bainfield. It was OK, but the surrounding area seemed run down. So I have some questions, if anyone can help..

  • is Bainfield safe?
  • What about the area? Is it safe enough walking around in the evening?
  • how good is the bus service? She’d be spending her time between the Merchiston and Craiglockhart campuses
  • How easy is it to travel into the city centre? I’m thinking about nights out, in particular
  • also, what is Napier like as a uni?
  • how good is the support for dyslexic students?

I wouldn’t call Fountain Bridge run down. It’s an old industrial side of the city that’s being re generated and it is FULL OF STUDENTS. She will have a 5 mins trip to the city centre on bus or about a 10-15 min walk. Merchiston campus is a 20 min walk or 2 buses (35 & 16). Craiglochart is 20 mins away on the bus either a 27 or a 10.

Of course you have to be alert in cities but I would walk around that area in the evening and wouldn't have a problem with my teenagers doing so. It's v close to a massive cinema and bowling complex so there will be lots of people around. V handy for city centre and Merchiston campus.

Thanks for those replies. That settles my mind a bit. Fountain Park (I think that’s what it’s called?) looks great.
