Philosophy &Theology at Nottingham v PPE at ‘lower’ uni

Ds has grades in hand and is holding offers for PPE from Essex, Swansea and UEA and Politics and Economics from Leicester. Philosophy is his favourite subject so he’s unlikely to choose Leicester, unless it’s on the basis of proximity to home and cheap living costs.

He’s ambitious and really wants to prove himself after not putting the effort in at sixth form. Having done some research, it looks likely that Nottingham might be in clearing for Philosophy and Theology at his grades. Would it be worth him trading up if this happens (given it also ticks some other boxes - nearer to home, his sister is there and he’s familiar with the uni/city). He is very interested in Theology too. But he chose PPE partly because he thought the Economics element would help with employability.

Could you go on a weekend visit/day trip to both cities with him to get a rough feel/vibe?

I think most people who visit UEA kind of fall in love with it... Norwich is a lovely city, the uni campus is not far away (very frequent buses or can walk it) and there is a big lake on campus. It also feels very safe there.

I went to UEA many moons ago and I had to have a lot of support with maths for my course. They had an excellent tutor at the time and he used to tell me about the maths the economics people had to do and how it was very difficult! I think a lot of the students he helped were studying economics. I don't know if it's still the same, but there really was good maths support when I went.

Unfortunately he won't be able to visit anywhere before a decision has to be made, as he's abroad on his gap year. There are lots of campus/city tours online though, so he can get a good idea.

@TizerorFizz I'm sure he was physically in the lessons when the higher grade content was taught but that doesn't mean he actually took it in 😂For revision he decided to ignore it all. He's a very different person now as an 18.5 year old compared to the 14-15 year old who was constantly in trouble/ getting suspended for daft behaviour, so I'm not concerned that he will think parts of the degree are optional!

Thanks for that @Chewbecca , that's very reassuring.

DS did Theology at Nottingham around 10 years ago and then went on to do a masters and a doctorate in Philosophy (elsewhere). A number of the "star" names have moved on/retired but there are still some there who really inspired him.

What does he do now @Definitelyrandom ?

crazycrofter · 01/04/2025 22:50

Thanks @Definitelyrandom that's good to know. I can definitely see ds doing Philosophy and Theology and so could the friends I mentioned it to earlier! But it's up to him....
