I for one still have a kid waiting to hear about interviews. Thought I'd carry it over...

Just checking back on on this thread. What a lovely, supportive place, and I have no doubt from all of this that everyone's DC are wonderful people with huge potential, and the wider directions our kids take will not be defined by Oxbridge/non-Oxbridge in any important way.

Commiserations to all who are dealing with disappointment. So hard to see our DC sad for whatever reason. I hope it's passing quickly, and that whatever comes next is - as I'm sure it will be - amazing.

And congratulations to all who are pleased with the outcome.

DS did get an offer for physics in the end. I was a bit surprised, because he thought some of the interviews had gone terribly, and (despite the helpful graph someone posted earlier in the thread showing how post-interview perception doesn't seem to predict much), I believed him. Thought I'd post this as potentially useful for people in future who are upset after their interviews. Also, his PAT score, although fairly good, was not stellar (judging by the graph, I think probably below median for shortlisted candidates). And his GCSE results are not perfect (and he didn't do that many - usual number for a mid-range comp).

Before the result, I'd started getting excited about other unis/physics courses with him - a process which has left me quite sure that there are other equally good (and in many ways often better) places out there. It's largely the level of investment in the application process that makes it seem Oxbridge is such a big deal. If some of the other unis went through as many selection steps, we'd be having threads about those!
There is so much random-ness (or at least unexplained, unexpected variation) in all of this.

All the very best to everyone. We can all be equally proud of our lovely kids.

Not sure if anyone knows how the Cambridge acceptance/declines come out on Thursday? While DD is ok with a rejection and she has a couple of decent offers already, she is autistic and struggles with the wait. She doesn’t want to go to school that day - fine by me - but I am at work all day and just wondering if it is all fairly done by noon, which largely seemed to be the case with Oxford?

I’m no expert but I looked back at last years Oxbridge thread, and the offers seemed to start as early as 7.30am (Trinity).
The wait is is awful! My poor child keeps dreaming about their interviews.

CalmaLlamaDown · 25/01/2025 12:44

I’ve looked again and someone analysed the notification times by College (!) and the vast majority had heard by 11am.

imip · 25/01/2025 13:04

Ah, thanks - that’s was kinda what my Quick Look at other threads had lead me to think - mostly acknowledged by noon. The wait is horrible. I have a y12, who I think on the basis of this, would not consider Oxbridge despite having a chance. Up to her though, she know’s what she can manage!

yonderhouse · 25/01/2025 13:51

Probably a silly question… but I wonder if colleges who sent interview invites early are particularly efficient, and therefore more likely to update the system early in the morning?!

tortoise18 · 25/01/2025 14:10

Another question... if you're picked up from the pool, does the email come from the college you originally applied for (so looks at first glance like a rejection) or from the college that picked you up?

irregularegular · 25/01/2025 14:49

JulietSierra · 18/01/2025 19:29

I find it odd that my dd has been offered OppOx when my son (from the same postcode and same school) wasn’t offered it when he went to Oxford back in 2022.
Not that it matters, just interesting.

It is not sufficient that they have the right postcode/school etc for Opp Ox. It's only offered to candidates who it is felt would benefit from the extra help. If they are very high up the rankings of accepted candidates, then they won't be given an Opp Ox offer.

From the new college

So if you get an email from a new college - you know it will be an offer?

And if you get an email from original college - it could be either a rejection or an offer?

...because you wont know you have been pooled until decision day (unless one of the 1% re-interviewed)

PhotoDad · 25/01/2025 15:32

The colleges across Ox and Cam are trying to get better at updating through UCAS. With Oxford this year, most candidates at the school where I teach got a "your status has been updated" email from UCAS before contact from colleges.

A few years back, UCAS was only updated weeks after the offer day, as an afterthought. I gather that UCAS didn't like that!

yonderhouse · 25/01/2025 16:15

@pandapoop - exactly right I think!

Oh, so she’s not high up in the rankings? Don’t think I’ll tell her that, might take the shine off somewhat.

pinkspeakers · 25/01/2025 21:19

no perhaps best not. And she’s done brilliantly anyway!

JulietSierra · 26/01/2025 09:19

She actually has. To get an Oxford offer and three predicted A stars from a bog standard comp which was in special measures only a few years ago is no mean feat is it?
My son (from the same bog standard comp) is in his third year at Oxford and has never had imposter syndrome which is what I really worried about. He’s made amazing friends and had fantastic experiences. Hopefully if dd goes she’ll be exactly the same.

coffeerevelsrule · 26/01/2025 09:59

Fingers crossed for all those waiting to hear from Cambridge this week - the waiting is tough and my ds didn't get the UCAS update until around 1pm and the letter from the college came the next day.

I was wondering about Oxford offer holder days. Ds only went to an Oxford open day after Y11 with school and it didn't focus much on his subject or the college he ended up applying to and obviously I wasn't there (I do know it's not about me!). Has anyone heard anything about offer holder days or is anyone planning to just go for a wander?

Malbecfan · 26/01/2025 10:25

It's a while ago now but when DD received her offer from a college she hadn't even heard of, we decided to go & visit in February half term. She didn't notify them in advance, we just rocked up. They could not have been nicer; she took her offer letter (well it was 2017!) and everyone from the porters to the catering manager to the admissions lady was lovely and welcoming. As a result, she got a good happy vibe and accepted the place. Now it's 2025 and she's still a student there, albeit not living in.

coffeerevelsrule · 26/01/2025 10:42

That sounds lovely @Malbecfan . We are a few hours away from Oxford but my parents are much nearer and we are going to see them in half-term so I'm very tempted to do what you did - I wonder if colleges are all so welcoming? DS has an offer from Magdalen and they still do letters rather than emails so he has a letter to take!

yonderhouse · 26/01/2025 10:49

I have another question! Oxford outcome happened a few weeks ago and UCAS deadline is 29th - so those who didn’t get an Oxford offer could feasibly add another university choice to their list of possible destinations now by updating their form.

But given the Cambridge results are on the 30th, it seems the Cambs applicants won’t have the opportunity to do that. Am I missing something?

Malbecfan · 26/01/2025 11:10

@coffeerevelsrule before DD's offer, the magic words were "prospective student" especially when wandering along Kings Parade in Cambridge which is somewhat of a tourist hotspot. The porters want to keep certain people out, but in our experience of many colleges, could not have been more helpful when the magic words were uttered. After all, they are potentially the first contact a student has with a particular college, so it really matters how they appear. For example Churchill College which is a bit of a hike from the city centre had the most lovely people on duty, and a rather colourful college scarf which did impress DD when she was 16. She also loved the ducks at Emmanuel!

So armed with your DS's letter, I'm sure they will be fine especially if you take the line "might it be possible...?" rather than "here I am, come on, impress me!"

No idea @yonderhouse sorry.

Umbilicat · 26/01/2025 11:16

DCs College said in the offer email they were having an open day and save the date, adding more info soon. Each college will do a bit differently. If you show up with your offer email I am 100% certain they will let you in. Good luck all the Cambridge people it’s been such a long wait!

You can't just replace a choice you were unsuccessful at with another one, if that's what you mean.

Thats correct - but if you are grades in hand it would have allowed you to add other Unis if you didnt get an unconditional before 29th. So Oxford applicants can do this this year but Camb cant - last year Cam decisions were 24th Jan. Not really a big deal though.

JanglyBeads · 26/01/2025 18:39

DS has had offer holder day info, 22/02 so at end of half term which is great. I hadn't even realised Oxbridge did offer holder days!

It's a growing thing at Oxford since switching to online interviews post pandemic. It makes up for missing out on the visit to college for interview. I think a lot of Colleges do them now. I'm not aware of any that did them before.
