I for one still have a kid waiting to hear about interviews. Thought I'd carry it over...

DS (3rd year C) only had his two scheduled interviews @NigellaAwesome He then received an offer from a completely different college so he was obviously fished out of the pool.

Malbecfan · 13/12/2024 13:14

Similar to @Panicmode1 , my DD had 2 interviews on the same day at one college at C @NigellaAwesome . However, like Panicmode's DS, my DD's offer came from a completely different college that she hadn't even heard of.

At graduation, the Admissions Tutor spoke to us and said that he was responsible for fishing DD out of the pool and that it was "one of my better decisions". Probably baloney, but nice for parents and DD to hear.

One of my students has had interviews at 2 different colleges at C but she is an organist, so it could be something to do with scholarships etc. I will be catching up with her next week for a debrief.

I am a bit confused by all the extra interviews too. My DD had two interviews at Oxford - everyone applying for her course gets two. Does she need to keep checking her email in case a third comes up, or would she have been warned about this in advance on the website or by one of the colleges that interviewed her?

tTheyshould have warned her in advance, at least my DD for her subject was warned at the start of the process it could be a possibility and is now in the really annoying position of having to cancel all (nice) weekend plans just in case the email comes through on Monday morning … of course she doesn’t actually need to cancel them as it’ll make no difference, but that’s her thinking!

elkiedee · 13/12/2024 13:46

On GCSE grades and A level predictions, DS1 didn't have perfect GCSE grades. For the hardest to get into and high in league tables A level sixth form college, he needed an average of 7.5 across his best 8 GCSEs (out of 9 in his case). He averaged 8.25 across his best 8, 8 across all 9 (4 9s, 2 8s, 2 7s and a 6.

On A level predictions, I am not sure what DS1's predictions would be outside of the prestige university application situation as it is now. He doesn't think he'll get an A in Philosophy, he doesn't assume he will in the others. He does already have an A in Maths and is now studying Further Maths this year, and his other subjects over 2 years. His offers seem still seem quite high to me, but quite achievable for him, particularly as they're based on an achieved result and two out of three grades next summer.

However, if the expectation is that students need predictions of 3/4 4 A*s to get an interview, I think it's most likely that schools will make that most optimistic prediction to give students they may have encouraged to apply to Oxbridge etc, who have progressed well in sixth form and can see that they could do well on their chosen courses, the best possible chance. It's not just the students who are in competition here, the schools are too.

Here you go. This timetable tells you which courses may do additional interviews, when they would be and when you will hear by:

That's definitely circuitous HarrietteVane :)

irregularegular would moderation be a waste of time though? One of these young people were subsequently told that they were sent around to show other colleges what the top standard was at the first college in that particular year. Some tutors seem to speak fairly freely once a student is in, especially if they like and respect that student.

Thats quite bizarre - was the student aware that they were being used for 'training and development' purposes?

How exploitative and stressful for the student. And no guarantee that they would perform consistently. Not buying it personally. Surely a (consentual) recording could have been shared?

The student I know who was interviewed by three different (and increasingly less status) colleges was ultimately rejected.

ofteninaspin · 13/12/2024 14:20

@NigellaAwesome Cambridge interviews are college based so it would be unusual to have an unscheduled interview elsewhere. Having said that, candidates can get an offer from a seemingly random college without being pooled. DS was interviewed by two tutors (from different colleges) in one interview. DS was subsequently made an offer by the college he had applied to to (there were 11 interviewees and three offers were made by the college in question) but a fourth interviewee was offered a place at the college of the other tutor.

This is the situation we are in too - no word of any second college or back up.

My personal hope is that this is because her first choice college really like her, but who knows.

Tutors can be remarkably frank about who they choose and why. DD's subject cohort of seven were each told why they were made offers. Her tutor said he didn't care what a student's non academic interests were as long as they were used to being busy and juggling high grades alongside "other stuff". But each tutor and college will be looking for something different I guess.

Currentquandry · 13/12/2024 15:05

My DS had two interviews earlier this week at the same small college for English. He's convinced he messed them up and that he won't be offered a place. He tends to be negative (and then do well) but he does struggle with speaking (he's better on paper!) and the competition will have been fierce so he may well be right. But he's now really down on himself which is so hard to see. I know it will all be fine in the end but I do wish the waiting timing was different/shorter. (I realise this would be impractical given how many interviews they have to conduct assess!) I hope he has a slim chance still as he's so self motivated I think he would be suited there. He only started the A level six months ago (long story) so we're just trying to tell him he's done an incredible job even to get an interview. Anyway, empathy to everyone else witnessing their DC struggling post interview and wishing good results for everyone! Also, would like to say a general thank you to everyone who has posted advice, tips and their experiences on this thread -- it's been so helpful. The generosity on MN is really heartening.

Speaking totally candidly I think it is more likely that the tutor who later told an admitted student that they were "sent around to show them what the top standard was" is more likely to have been gently joking, in a flattering kind of way, now that the student is admitted and turned out to be very good.

Is this for Maths?

HarrietteVane · 13/12/2024 17:06

@Currentquandry oh my sympathies but you are right - your DS (like all of the young'uns on this thread) really has done incredibly well to get an interview offer.

And whatever happens they've got everything they need to enjoy the next phase of their lives - at least they're not going to college to study something they aren't excited by!

AsTearsGoBy · 13/12/2024 17:08

pandapoop it wasn't in any way stressful for the student in question. He was already a scholar by that stage - a comment from a tutor he liked is not going to increase expectations further; once you get a first in prelims/ mods and are made a scholar pretty much everyone is expecting a first from you in finals. He and the other young people in exactly the same position (interviews at three colleges but in each case getting an offer from their first choice) were concerned at first that this meant they hadn't made the cut at their first choice but they very clearly had. This practice obviously varies from subject to subject from what irregularegular says.

pandapoop · 13/12/2024 17:20

When was this @AsTearsGoBy ?

expandabandband · 13/12/2024 17:22

@Gina555 No (thank goodness). MFL.

Cysco · 13/12/2024 17:25

Does anyone know about music at Oxford? My son had interviews at 2 colleges, but did not receive an email inviting him to a departmental interview. Does that mean he has been rejected Does anyone know?

The music students I knew were shuffled around before interview, so if you played piano you would be sent to a college which suited your specialism.

The most recent one applied to one college, was shuffled to LMH, no other nterviews, received an offer from LMH & accepted an offer for the Tonmeister degree at Surrey instead.

Good luck for MFL.
My DS still has just the two interviews on Mon for the college he applied to for Maths 🤞.

coffeerevelsrule · 13/12/2024 18:44

@Currentquandry Sorry to read about your ds- sounds almost exactly like mine, except he normally is good at talking and he won't stop beating himself up for having 'fucked it,' as he has succinctly put it. I feel like a bit of a flop as a parent as he is so obsessed with Oxbridge and really uninspired by all his other options, which is ridiculous. Hopefully, if he's right and it's going to be a no, he will have partially accepted it before it becomes official and will be able to move on.

The awful thing is I think he may be hoping for a second interview, the summons for which will apparently come by 11am on Monday. I'm worried if that doesn't happen he'll go back to square one for a bit.

Misfitkickedoutonthestreet · 13/12/2024 19:14

Second college for MFL here - came late in the day (5.30pm) for Monday. Dc pleased not to have been written off yet as second interview at first college didn't go well.
