Camp America

Are there any parents whose kids have done camp America?

My daughter is currently taking a gap year before going off to uni next.
She is really interested in doing camp America next summer.
We have had a good chat with a student who has just been for his second summer in a row. We have had loads of useful tips and advice from him. He did say you don’t do camp America for the money because you actually end up being out of pocket and you do it for the experience.
That suits my daughter fine as she is definitely wants to do it for the great experience.

Just wanted to know if anyone’s child has been and if you can tell me about their experience.

Thanks in advance.

Thank you all for the reassuring replies!

My dd flies on 15th. We are going to start packing next week. We arranged the flights ourselves and she’s very well traveled, so I’m not too worried about that bit. I’ve booked her into a hotel so she can relax before heading to camp the following day. I keep panic buying things for her to take.

Oh I was a nervous wreck too! I only relaxed a bit once he arrived safely 😊

This is how I’m feeling now as DS2 has arrived in New York, only 1 more flight left to go.

It’s so lovely to read how they are starting to head off or already at camp.
Two weeks Saturday my daughter goes🙈
Amazing really how well they have done in getting this far.

Please keep posting updates.

Yes I should be used to saying goodbye by now. For some reason this feels scarier! I'm not too worried about the camp bit. It's the travelling round America afterwards that is stressing me! Although that is 2 months away so I should just concentrate on now I guess!
It's good to hear your DS has settled in well.

Hi welcome to the chat.

I am totally with you on this , I’m not too bothered about the security or the flight although my daughter had a chronic illness so will be carrying a few injections on the flight. She has a gp letter and a cool bag for storage.

It is more the travelling round for two weeks at the end that I am worried about too.
I am hoping that by then our feelings will improve and we will feel more settled with it all.

Hi everyone, we have a bit of an emergency in that our GPs have said they can’t complete the medical form on time…

He flies Monday. We have access to his medical records.
please help!

IsItAllMenopause · 05/06/2025 20:24

Thanks for the welcome and solidarity.
Oh must be even more difficult with a chronic illness to contend with. My DS has asthma and food allergies so that is not helping my nerves.

Can you print them off or get them to email them next week?

If you have access to his records, how about a private GP service?

Can he get intouch with his camp to ask advice? My daughter has emailed her camp quite a lot for advice on things.

How awful that your GP won’t f try and get it done in time, not like it is a form that will take ages to fill in.
I am guessing you explained the money that it has cost for your son to go out there.

I’m fine with her chronic illness as it well controlled with medication, I am more concerned with her getting through security with her bag of injections. I’m sure it will be fine and I am worrying unnecessary.

And I will also guess that you would have to pay for the form to be completed, as well as we had to pay £40 even before the GP would sign it.

Hi everyone, my daughter flies on Monday to Boston and is heading up to Maine- I think we’re almost sorted, has felt like quite a task to get everything sorted. We just need to sort her a phone eSIM now as her phone contract is really expensive for USA. Anyone else’s offspring heading out this weekend?

A kind poster on my AIBU thread has prompted me to think about insurance for DSs pre-existing condition….

I think we’ve used Good2Go before

That’s good news.

My daughter has gone with Walkabout insurance for her existing condition, it was a lot cheaper than most but the cover is really good.

Hope everyone's young people are getting on well or preparations nearly done if have not yet left. Dd's camp has their first set of campers arriving today, she's very nervous and very excited. She seems to be getting on well with some of the other counsellors, which is great and was her biggest worry. She's struggling with the food a bit, not really her thing, so that's the current hurdle.
