Help! Maths question

What equation do you use for this? My daughter is in year 8 and I'm stumped. I was never great at Maths and I don't know if it's meant to be Pythagoras or Law of sines or something else? It's on Sparx so not a lesson she has been doing in class- sort of generates randomness.

That’s a right angled triangle so shouldn’t it be Pythagoras’ theorem?

I thought that but then the right angle part is technically missing and not included in the length.

If it’s on Sparx maths there should be a video to show you how to do it.

It’s to do with the formula for area of a triangle (0.5 base x height). You could use 12 as the base, in which case 2 is the height so area = 12. So if unknown value is the base, 3 is the height. Therefore unknown value is 8.
