Are this only for people from disadvantaged backgrounds?

DD has considered applying for some at IC but every time we look at the criteria we get put off.

The vast majority will be targeted at students from widening participation backgrounds yes. However criteria (and how strict it is) will vary university to university. I imagine the demand at IC is very high, so don’t think there will be any flex.

Eton used to run a summer school for state educated pupils aiming for top unis. Dont know if this has changed now VAT being added to their fees

Thank you. Daughter is state educated but the other criteria doesn’t apply. I guess she can try

In February UNIQ will open their applications for Oxford Easter & Summer Schools. These are for WP but if you don't try, you can't get a place.

They're for disadvantaged applicants. If you don't tick ANY of their disadvantage criteria, which is pretty broad, why would you think she is disadvantaged and therefore deserving of a space? Confused

ElaineMBenes · 21/09/2024 12:22

Does your daughter meet any of the WP criteria? Because they're aimed at particular groups for a reason

Dearover · 21/09/2024 12:27

However, they all have different criteria. They prioritise applicants, but if you happen to match something they are looking for, you may get a place.

Some schemes & programmes from some universities target specific groups. eg. New College Oxford runs a programme for schools in Wales. Still outreach.

OP has said she doesn't match ANY of their criteria.

There may be something somewhere for women in STEM assuming that's the area she is interested in.

Many outreach programmes are aimed at raising aspirations and encouraging YP to consider university. Not all outreach schemes are for people from disadvantaged backgrounds. If they don't meet the criteria for one scheme, they may meet the criteria for another.

Sometimes the additional criteria only apply if the programme is oversubscribed eg Academic Attainment Programme 2024-2026 | Lucy Cavendish (cam.ac.uk)
