DD's girlfriend lying about her degree result

DD (22) just graduated and is applying for jobs. Has been updating her LinkedIn profile etc. She worked so hard at uni and was delighted to get a First Class degree, which she has put on her education section.

DD's girlfriend 'Jen'* of 2 years (who we've met, had to stay etc and had become quite fond of...) has also set up her profile, but has listed her degree result as a 'First' when actually she got a (still very good) 2:1.
When DD casually mentioned it, Jen laughed it off and said 'everyone lies on their profiles and CVs' and claimed 'nobody will ever know'.

We're both sad and shocked I think. DD said to me it feels like a 'slap in the face' for those students who REALLY got a first class degree, and we feel sad that Jen thinks nothing of her lying and deception.

Nothing can/will be done, but just wondered what folk thought?

*not her real name!

Education. Every interview ever, first thing they do is request degree certificates. Perfectly normal in teaching, Wales, England.

STEM stuff too. DD2 is always asked for her degree certificates. One employer explained that they required her MSc certificate because she had listed on her application that she has experience using a piece of tech which undergrads would not have.

Omds this post resonates with something I recently discovered about a friend. My friend doesn't have a degree, she did her a levels but never went any further. She now works as a director in a financial company and lists on her linked in page a degree with no classification or graduation date. The degree title is actually quite long for a degree and appears to be an attempt to cover 'bases' to show she is qualified for her job. I'm actually quite thrown by the whole thing and considering writing to her HR department and suggesting v strongly they check her paperwork. I work in a different industry and I have a degree, which I worked v hard for and I find it v difficult to stomach some one lying about having something they don't have xx what should I do? As far as the girl who's lied about her degree classification, at least she has the degree, I think it's sad she lied about the final outcome and she is probably under a lot of pressure xxx

Dearover · 11/01/2025 18:47

@kbop82 does she have a professional qualification? Some allow you to use your professional exams topped up with some coursework to award a degree alongside it. Fir example, ACCA can also give you a degree from Oxford Brookes.

Kbop82 · 11/01/2025 20:13

No professional qualifications listed, we used to all discuss our studies when we were younger, my other friend in banking was constantly working towards something internal as she worked her way up. She would miss nights out etc to get these qualifications but this other one never mentioned anything 🙄 😒 xx

Christ, if that's what you'd considering doing to a friend, I'd hate to see what you have in store for an enemy. 🔥

Well it's fraud and if she's doing that what else is she doing? Plus she has a habit of shagging her bosses and likes married men.

Are you sure she's a friend! I have a friend who I've known since university 40 years ago and we lost contact for a long time. I decided to find her and discovered where she was working. She was very high up in the organisation and there was a short resume of her career etc. It was total hogwash - she failed her first year exams at university and left - got a job at a stockbrokers for a few months, then hmrc for a short while until she became ill for a long time. Anyway the resume was total fiction but there was no way I would have contacted her employer!

Why do you refer to someone you clearly despise as a 'friend'? Weird. Do both her and yourself a favour and detach.

What does her having sex with bosses or married men have to do with you?
These men are adults right?

Unless her falsified qualification puts others at risk.

And more fool her company for not verifying.

glittereye · 13/01/2025 19:48

Really silly of her. A friend of mine lied about grades (I can’t remember if it was A level or degree result) when going for a job in a law firm - the offer was immediately withdrawn when they found out.

Can’t stand all the LinkedIn bullshittery. Someone I know who went to a second rate UK university states ‘Duke University’ (US Ivy League) under his Education section - when he paid to do a two week management course there 😂

And DH’s brother (who is obsessed with staus) puts Oxford down as his. He went to uni in London and then did postgrad at Oxford - still impressive of course, but not quite the same!

Hmm I agree most people exaggerate on a covering letter perhaps.
But exam results I'm not sure.
I've never been asked for exam results whether school or college but was asked for certicates in qualifications to do with nvqs.

fiftiesmum · 15/01/2025 18:49

Linked in doesn't really matter that much - most of the stuff people put on their profile is utter bullshit (I know mine is but then I am not looking for a job I just wanted to what ridiculous stuff I could put without actually lying.)
When it comes to actually applying it doesn't really matter that much as the company or organisation just do stupid quizzes, multiple choice questions or random selection just to cut down numbers then at interview the gobby extroverts get the job.

Yeah...no.

I'll make sure to tell DS (24) that as he just got his recent six figure salary new job through LinkedIn!

Would you like some vinegar for that chip on your shoulder? 😂

fiftiesmum · 15/01/2025 20:26

I am sure he deserves every single penny and he is contributing tax and NI to support the vulnerable of this country and no I prefer ketchup on my chips.

NewZealandintherain · 16/01/2025 09:19

I think that’s a shocker and I agree I would put off them as a person.

“Slap in the face to others who got firsts” is a bit OTT. My son worked his backside off for his 2.2 and I’m still proud of him.

But the lying is not good. I don’t like liars.

BigSilly · 22/01/2025 05:13

DS was really annoyed that his friend, who has gone on to work at the same high profile organisation as him did this and got away with it.

That's on the men, not her. She's not the married one.

Also, that is unlikely to happen these days with all the rules about sexual harassment in companies (and also the incoming non-financial misconduct rules in financial services).

Keep out of it. Not your business and it's better she's in a job than unemployed and claiming benefits.
