Hi is Warwick uni no longer RG , if so does that mean that the criteria for entry has been lowered?

OP posts:
Skule · 07/09/2024 08:05

No, and no.

RoseAndRose · 07/09/2024 08:05

Yes it is Russell Group

No reason to think entrance grades will change

Why do you ask?

geoger · 07/09/2024 08:07

No it’s not leaving the RG.
The student newspaper published an article saying Warwick had been kicked out of RG as an April fools joke

Duchess87 · 07/09/2024 08:38

Oh ok

Not to mention 10 years out with the establishment of the Topp Unis Coffee Morning - sorry - Russell Group. Although tbf that may have been deliberate, to help signpost the 'April 1st-ness' (I do hope so, but given the number of people on Internet forums who salivate over the desirability of attending a member university, but can't even spell Russell correctly, who knows?).

Pretty much par for the course for the Tab. Although if you look at the old Tab GoT articles then this one is really quite mild.

boys3 · 07/09/2024 09:28

@Duchess87 this is the official hype central site https://russellgroup.ac.uk/about/our-universities/ . Probably a better source for marketing, sorry Russell, Group comings and goings. Last joiners Durham, Exeter, York, QMUL back in 2012. Rather like Hotel California though no one ever leaves.

As far as I know, the Russell Group is entirely self-selecting. So membership of it may not be quite as meaningful as we tend to think.

Other non-Russell Group unis (e.g. Bath) are just as "good," imo.

(I have no skin in this game - my DC goes to a Russell Group uni and I have no DC at Bath. Still think the Russell Group thing is a bit of a crock, though.)

TossedSaladandSE · 29/10/2024 14:46

Look at the date of the article

It's April 1st

It's an April Fools joke

So not true

The mockery is exactly the kind of private school snobbery you can expect at Warwick.

Sorry to add my voice to this but for most undergraduates RG Uni membership is not meaningful. At all. Pretty successful marketing propaganda on their part though

The fact DfE used to report 6th form leaver destinations to RG Unis as part of their evaluation of school teaching quality is appalling (IME). But it probably explains why so many teachers encourage pupils to apply

tennissquare · 30/10/2024 08:44

It's been announced that the DfE will stop this

Warwick uni
BobtheFrog · 30/10/2024 11:52

thanks tennissquare, I often wonder how that situation with DfE ever became reality - my conclusion is that it must have been some sort of 'old boys network' type conversation.

Which sort of sets the tone for the nature of RG as whole to me, but maybe that is just my own prejudices surfacing

BobtheFrog · 30/10/2024 11:59

apologies for taking this off topic, just checked the title of the thread

And no intended disrespect to Warwick, its a cracking uni

My daughter is wavering between Warwick and York - which is slightly ironic given my apparent anti RG bias - however you look at it, the best uni for someone is the best uni, regardless of anything else

There's 17% private school at Warwick which is low for a top ten Uni. It's also high for diversity.
Its pretty unsnobby hence the posho's prefer Durham and Exeter.

I thought the same thing when I saw that post yesterday.

If you are looking for private school snobbery, Warwick is not a good place to find it.

I’m very much not posh and I don’t recognise this description of Warwick.
