Lots of examples of what they wear if you either Google sub function or matriculation. Someone at DD's graduation was only allowed in after swapping her white shoes for the black shoes worn by one of the graduation team! They are very strict

Stockpot · 02/09/2025 18:06

Is matriculation something parents come and watch? Or is it a student only thing?

HoneyMobster · 02/09/2025 18:55

It’s a student only thing @Stockpot

Stockpot · 02/09/2025 19:08

Good to know- I won’t feel guilty about taking time off work or missing it. :-)

Juja · 02/09/2025 19:26

@Stockpot I think you might be less than welcome - quite a lot of partying follows matriculation!

Malbecfan · 03/09/2025 07:06

Prepare to empty your wallet for the photos though! They do make good Christmas presents for relatives.

3Muses · 03/09/2025 09:48

Matriculation will be live streamed for us. Also I think the formality of the dress is college dependent as all that is required for for our college is formal. It doesn't have to be black.

I would double check what they said about the dress code. The definition of sub-fusc is set by the university, not by colleges, and there aren't different rules for matriculation for different colleges as it's a university ceremony with lots of colleges mixed together.

What it says about the colour rules for sub-fusc there is "‘Dark’ in this context generally means black, a very dark charcoal grey, or very dark blue may be permitted, but must be virtually black. All clothing must be plain; pinstripes or patterns are not permitted."

As a poster above said, they are very strict. What you don't want is a crisis on what should be a happy day.

Matriculation | University of Oxford

Matriculation confers membership of the University on students. Regulations for matriculation are set out in the University Statutes and Regulations.

Thanks. Sorry, I was talking about Cambridge colleges.

Malbecfan · 03/09/2025 20:02

Just to confirm that at Cambridge it does not need to be black. DD wore a navy dress and peach coloured (very) high heels. Pics are gorgeous!

PermanentTemporary · 04/09/2025 18:44

So we are out the other end… ds just got offered a job from his summer internship. Absolutely made up for him. Am still a bit emotional that he doesn’t get to go back to C because it was such an amazing 3 years, but am so proud of him and also very chuffed that he will be earning a living!

skyeinthesun · 04/09/2025 19:58

That's wonderful @PermanentTemporary- really chuffed for him. Several of of DD's Oxford friends have received 'return' offers after their summer internships. It's a lovely way to start 4th Year knowing there is a job waiting.

Ironoaks · 04/09/2025 21:26

@PermanentTemporary congratulations to him!

AsTearsGoBy · 04/09/2025 22:35

Fantastic news PermanentTemporary!

Juja · 04/09/2025 22:38

That’s brilliant news @PermanentTemporary , well done to your DS and for being so positive after his initial disappointment

Panicmode1 · 05/09/2025 06:45

Congratulations to your DS, @PermanentTemporary, that is brilliant news.

Clemenc0 · 05/09/2025 11:17

Good morning @PermanentTemporary. Happy to add to this morning's encomia on your DS's achievement. That is very good news indeed.

Roomgigi · 05/09/2025 16:25

Question about Oxford sub fusc - the University doesn't mention skirt length however the suppliers talk about the skirt being close to knee length
Is there any requirement regarding skirt length?

Thanks

Scoobyblue · 05/09/2025 16:53

My dd has just graduated from Oxford. Her sub fusc skirt could best have been described as a wide belt. No-one ever mentioned it!

Dearover · 05/09/2025 19:54

DD's covered her bum, as she's relatively short. Thick black tights accessorised

Ironoaks · 06/09/2025 07:20

DS is back in Cambridge after a two-week summer break. He had his end of first year review viva yesterday and was pleased with how it went.

He is looking forward to the second year of his PhD. Something he co-wrote has been submitted for publication in one of Nature's journals, which is encouraging.

Dearover · 06/09/2025 08:18

Start of his 6th year! Does he still have the same living arrangements?

Yes, the college have allocated him the same room in the same flat again. It's a lovely spacious room and very close to the lab, so it's ideal for him.
