@Malbecfan congratulations to your DD! She's doing brilliantly in her career and you must be very proud of her.

I don't post on here so much these days but drop in from time to time and it'd be lovely if you and other 'old-timers' continued on as well.

Well done to all new and long-term posters DCs on everything they're achieving and coping with this term.

LaundryFairy · 11/03/2025 15:08

Congratulations to your DD @Malbecfan ! That is such splendid news! Like @mutterphore , I’m not a regular poster these days, but I do read along, and I’m very happy for you and her!

Malbecfan · 11/03/2025 19:38

Thank you all so much. I'm quite overwhelmed, probably due to 500+ miles of driving between Friday and Sunday, recording 9 GCSE Music ensemble pieces today (8 of which I played in) and the havoc that goes with coursework submissions in 2 subjects.

This is definitely the nicest group on MN.

Panicmode1 · 12/03/2025 16:26

I missed your fencing news @Daysnconfuddled - well done to DD. I have to confess I find fencing competitions somewhat confusing to watch as a spectator in a large hall with loads of bouts happening concurrently.....although I spent one of THE most amusing afternoons of my life earwigging on the competitive parenting of the mothers from a very famous girls' school, whilst I was sitting watching DS1, at a pre-Covid national schools fencing competition.

Our DS3 was at a fencing competition at the weekend, albeit at a slightly lower level 😂but he seems to enjoy it, even though

My DD has an offer for Cambridge in September. For anyone with offspring who have studied Natural Sciences, Computer Science or any other courses where you don't find out if you can study the integrated masters until the end of year 3 have they applied for the 3 year or 4 year courses for SFE? On the offer letter is says 3 but hoping to be able to do 4.

PermanentTemporary · 13/03/2025 13:58

@3Muses sorry can't remember! I'll ask ds.

Panicmode1 · 13/03/2025 15:17

DS is doing an integrated masters (MEng) and fairly sure he applied for 4....but it may be one where that is the standard rather than being told at the end of Y3 about Y4.

@Panicmode1 Thanks Panic. Ha, yes, I also have to admit I'm equally clueless as to the rules and scoring of fencing. If it wasn't for the electronic score displays and green/red lights I'd be a bit lost as to what's going on as it all happens so fast, but it was great to watch from front row seats as one of the proud and competitive parents none the less. I think Varsity is such a wonderful tradition of age old rivalry between them, and it's interesting to observe the distinct vibes from the two, one of exuberant confidence, the other of steely determination.

Malbecfan · 14/03/2025 12:08

@3Muses both DDs were advised to apply for the longest possible course, i.e. including the Integrated Masters. Apparently it's very straightforward to decline the 4th year of money but more challenging to apply mid-course. That may not be the case now as DD1 applied in 2016/7 but it served both fine, and they had no issues with the full courses being funded.

Thank you, it doesn't say anything about it for DDs college but she had read somewhere of others doing it, but couldn't remember where, so it's good to hear that it is a thing as that's what she intends to do.

Greenblossom · 15/03/2025 22:38

Can I just say here that I’m so grateful for this thread. I have a dd at Oxford and this has caused some comments from others in my life ‘she only got in because…’ (fill in the blank) ‘Oh, my child thought about it but didn’t want the pressure of the work..’ or whatever. So I don’t talk about it. I avoid telling people which university she’s at. She’s having a very good time and doing well. It’s a relief to have some kind of space as a parent.

AsTearsGoBy · 16/03/2025 09:41

I'm out the other end Greenblossom. I've always found people in rl extremely pleasant about my DC being at Oxbridge - the MN application threads not so much :)

Less than two weeks to go until one of my DS's has his wedding at his former Oxford college. Getting married to a fabulous tutorial partner who he met right at the start. She says he was annoying because he kept pinching her ideas in tutorials and making it appear that they were his own :) Anyhow, they seem to have got over it. Beautiful college on the High St. Very much a first for me being a mother of a groom; much luck required!

AsTearsGoBy · 16/03/2025 09:43

(Years ago I was asked to do a reading at my brother's wedding and on the way to the pulpit got my heel wedged in the grate of a tomb. Have declined the offer of doing a reading for DS. Not keen on history repeating itself).

Malbecfan · 16/03/2025 10:03

Hey congratulations @AsTearsGoBy . Is that a DS whose name begins with J? It can't be my DD's friend because his gf wasn't a tutorial partner - what a sleuth I am (not!).

AsTearsGoBy · 16/03/2025 10:16

Name begins with T Malbec and thank you!

So pleased about the job success for your DD1 :)

Malbecfan · 16/03/2025 10:23

Oh my goodness, T is getting married! It seems like only a few months since I was teaching him GS. Thanks about DD1. Did you hear about the school's Oxbridge successes this year?

AsTearsGoBy · 16/03/2025 10:58

I did - fantastic! Exactly as it should be too.

AsTearsGoBy · 16/03/2025 11:03

And I assure you Malbec, it seems like only a few months since he was a chubby little baby!

PettsWoodParadise · 16/03/2025 21:06

Oh wow @AsTearsGoBy congrats on the impending nuptials. What a lovely journey the couple have been on. 💍

HoneyMobster · 17/03/2025 08:47

A wedding. How lovely! Congratulations @AsTearsGoBy

We’ve had DD back for the weekend. She’s handed in her dissertation and has an extended essay to complete. Then heads down for exams and her pre-clinical time will be done.

But first she is going on a mystery holiday with her sports team. She’s due to turn up at the airport on Wednesday but has no idea where she’s going 😂

AsTearsGoBy · 17/03/2025 08:53

Thanks both :)

Gosh I hope the organiser of the tour is relatively discerning HoneyMobster! Please can we have a destination reveal later?

Clemenc0 · 17/03/2025 09:44

At long last! A college formal this evening to which we (as aged parents) have been invited. It is only his penultimate term. Never mind, as C is a short drive away we see the place often enough.

Malbecfan · 17/03/2025 14:57

Enjoy @Clemenc0 . We only got to one in DD's 3rd year a couple of weeks before Covid took off.

JulesJules · 17/03/2025 16:44

I've never got to one! We are too far away (also have never been asked 😂)
