Links to Clearing Vacancies (with grades)

HPFA · 14/08/2024 21:31

Some links to popular universities who've now published their clearing grades. I've tried to ensure these are all lists for UK students but not all the unis specify so possible that some are international students only.

If anyone's DCs are worrying tonight it might reassure them that there seem to be a lot of decent courses around. Suspect a lot of these might get snapped up quickly though!

Im just looking at clearing in preparation for ds future application and quite surprised by some of the courses in clearing. History and Geography both CCC at Uni Of Nottingham

Wakemeuuuup · 14/08/2024 22:21

Wow, physics in UoN is ccc too. That's shocking

CappuccinoChocolate · 14/08/2024 22:27

Poor Dd was devastated not to get into Southampton for Music on the day a couple of years ago ...now they are offering CCC!

This is bad news for some of the smaller Unis, especially for Humanities subjects...Russell Group will be increasing their share of the market and grabbing as many as they can.

Butterfly44 · 14/08/2024 23:40

Really shocked at clearing grades for some at Nottingham. Very different picture to this morning. Physics, Maths, Psychology...even Vet Med in clearing with reduced grades.

Tarjet · 14/08/2024 23:58

Wow BBB for Vet Med at Nottingham! That’s insane! Would this course normally be filled by overseas students who just haven’t applied this year?

HPFA · 15/08/2024 06:10

I'm interested that Loughborough puts "Minimum Grade" - I expect that's what some of these courses will turn out to be.

Doubt very much that anyone with BBB is getting in to Vet Med.

What a year! The lack of international students is clearing showing or the boundaries are high and many missed offers.

Maths at Bristol is in clearing although it’s showing the original offer level of A(star),A(star),A. Ditto Durham.

Warwick physics saying AAB including A in either Maths or Further Maths AND A in Physics. If memory serves this was A(star), A,A at offer stage.

crumblingschools · 15/08/2024 06:34

Are some of the low grades potentially including a foundation year?

Or does it mean high grade requirements are just a filter mechanism and you don’t actually need to excel in a subject to be able to do the degree. If you actually need to be really good at the subject to be able to access the degree content will universities have to dumb down the degree content or will there be a greater number of drop outs in the next couple of years?

O2HaveALittleHouse · 15/08/2024 06:38

I know for physics and maths, this can be the case. It would be foolhardy to attempt a maths degree without excelling so that’s why most of the highly academic ones insist on further maths. So the fact Bristol is keeping clearing high for maths, it’s really saying that they’d rather empty seats than failing seats.

Mumski45 · 15/08/2024 06:38

DS's insurance at Lancaster which he has an offer of AAA for is in clearing at BBC.

That's a massive difference and has put his mind at rest that it is unlikely that he won't be accepted.

O2HaveALittleHouse · 15/08/2024 06:48

Wow @Mumski45 what a drop. Is it law?

WomanFromTheNorth · 15/08/2024 06:50

Sheffield's clearing grades are no different to their usual grades. My DD has an offer for her course of ABB, and the same course at clearing is ABB. Not dropped at all. However, Nottingham's are so low compared to their usual requirements.

If Reading is offering courses like History at CCD how on earth are the universities normally heavily reliant on Clearing going to fill places?

@O2HaveALittleHouse no it's MORSE.

Ellerby83 · 15/08/2024 07:22

I wonder if Nottingham's applicant numbers were affected by the terrible stabbings a year ago?

HPFA · 15/08/2024 07:23

The unis who went into early clearing look like they made the right decision. As a post A Level applicant DD has already accepted her offer - but looking at these grade offers she could have got into somewhere higher up the rankings if she'd waited.

I haven't seen a course with modules that I think she'd prefer though, so it's likely all for the best. I also think she lost some academic confidence after her A-Level results so is probably best off not being a straggler in a RG uni not used to dealing with building students up!

Fantastic course with great options afterwards.

TheOnlyMrsW · 15/08/2024 08:03

Both DD's choices in there with much lower grades - one from BBB to CCC........not sure what that means one way or another, will find out soon I guess.

OvaHere · 15/08/2024 08:38

Course DS is looking at for next year at Liverpool is in there for BBC. Went to the open day earlier this year and it asks AAA.

I feel a bit better about him maybe putting it as insurance in Jan or even firm. His first choice at Manchester unsurprisingly is not in clearing but the chances of him getting on that are very slim.

Obviously I want him to do brilliantly but I don't think he'll get AAA. Best case with a lot of work over the next year he could get AAB I think. Realistic outcome ABB or ABC.

Ellerby83 · 15/08/2024 08:44

Yes its useful to know for future dcs applications. Makes you realise that predicted grades so important for getting the offers in the first place.

This is true. Tbh I don't even know whether his college will give him the predicted grades needed yet. Possibly not. We're looking at a range of options including some unis whose standard offer is lower. He really liked both Liverpool and Manchester though so I'm hoping clearing is good next year too.

pgtips2 · 15/08/2024 09:18

Heard that the physics paper this year was very hard again. So maybe why quite a few courses in clearing for physics with significantly lowered entry grades.
This is OK if people are applying for sci/physics degrees but much more unfair if students are looking to apply to other courses e.g. Humanties/Business/Economics.

Or do admissions tutors take the difficulty into account when making offers?
