Links to Clearing Vacancies (with grades)

Some links to popular universities who've now published their clearing grades. I've tried to ensure these are all lists for UK students but not all the unis specify so possible that some are international students only.

If anyone's DCs are worrying tonight it might reassure them that there seem to be a lot of decent courses around. Suspect a lot of these might get snapped up quickly though!

@MarchingFrogs as I said it's not my intention to offend anyone who did humanities or have kids doing this.
I did a humanities degree but I have to be honest and accept that my course was waaaaaay easier than for example any kind of engineering is.
Of course we are all different with our own strenghts but surely pretty much everyone that wants to go to uni can/should be able to learn how to structure an essay and memorise facts without any problem. If not probably university is not the right path for them.
However not many are capable of passing the component of the Physics exam (as an example).
Well done to everyone but all the credit to those chosing the most difficult subjects. It's my opinion.

Is there any way to see which courses were in clearing this year? We were away so I didn't follow it but it'd be really useful to see whether any of the courses that DS (starting yr 13) is looking at were in clearing. He's looking at Chemistry.

@SinkingVoter hi, have a look at the Complete University Guide page.
You can look for a list of courses in Clearing there.

@titchy It's not comparable at all.
References for a new job are based on something that has already been achieved, it's done. You have already done a job and you only need a written prove to show a future employer. You've already earn it.
"Predicted grades" are only that, a prediction about a future event that may or may not happen.
The whole concept of allocating university places based on a system that "predicts the future" it's just shocking.

Again - places are not offered based on predicted grades. They are offered SUBJECT TO ACHIEVING certain grades.

No uni says 'Oh you're predicted 3 x As - have a place'.

Same as sixth form - places on say A level courses are offered SUBJECT TO achieving certain GCSE grades.

Lon24 · 04/09/2024 11:18

@titchy
Again -Conditional places are allocated months before doing the exams.
This is is the reality of a system that doesn't make sense.
How many will achieve higher grades than predicted and won't be able to even apply for certain unis?
Predicted grades based on the teachers subjective opinions, school policies and so on....it's not a transparent system and it's only unfair on the kids.
My personal opinion

That will be just what is left in clearing now though won't it? Not at results day

Lon24 · 04/09/2024 11:42

@SinkingVoter
Yes, I think so.

@pgtips2 bollocks.
I know kids who find math relatively easy but would struggle to write an essay. I know kids who do well in both and get A stars in both.
And of course unis take into account the subject - you aren't going to do economics without Math and FM (if offered), you aren't going to do English without essay subjects. So what does it matter? You take subjects as they relate to your degree. And results are curved - a 60% result may get you an A in Physics but you may need a 75% to get an A in History. It doesn't follow that Physics is harder than History, it's just different.

Well, the point is that you could argue that for subjects such as Chemistry/FM there should be a larger % receiving the top grades as to even sit those A-levels the bar is higher in terms of needing 7-9s whereas much lower in some other subjects.

Also, it doesn't matter if you get a B in chemistry if your're looking for STEM courses but if you switch, e.g. to Business where someone doing General Studies (A*) will be taken instead of someone achieving a Chemistry A.

Well not quite. They are offered on predicted grades - conditionally - but many, many students are still kept on even if they miss the offer grades by one or even 3 grades.

So those kids who didn't get predicted the high grades but ACTUALLY achieved the higher grades don't have a look in.

Very unfair and strange system!

Thanks for this, it's interesting that so many are still available.

pgtips2 · 07/09/2024 16:23

@Lon24 Yes, had a look. It's useful but they don''t list the courses that were (but are no longer) available on results day. Admittedly some of these disappeared quickly but was interesting to see what was being offered 'on the day' so to speak!

It’s buyers market for most courses.

They want to give the impression of being highly selective and elite….but they need to fill their places to get the money in. It’s all demand and supply at the end of the day.

There are very few courses in very few places that can easily fill all their places with people who firm them at the standard grade offer and who actually achieve those grades. Even good RG unis are all fighting each other for the applicants. Everyone applies to 5 but can only go to 1. Even very good unis will have lots who don’t firm them but firm elsewhere. Some courses are far less popular than you might think. Some unis have expanded so much that they need to take lower qualified candidates to fill. Online Clearing allows lots of trading up and more shifting around post-results than before. It’s a gunfight for 48 hours after results, which gradually subsides in the coming days. Unis would rather take someone from a biggish pool with lower grades on results day Clearing (or the candidate that firmed them and so definitley wants to come and is more likely o actually turn up, but missed their offer quite substantially) than risk getting to the middle of the week next week and holding out for higher grades and never filling the places. When RG unis are putting out large numbers of courses at CCC you realise the sector is probably just too big in a number of courses.

"When RG unis are putting out large numbers of courses at CCC you realise the sector is probably just too big in a number of courses"

It makes you realise that the prediction system doesn´t make any sense whatsoever and that many students don´t achieve predicted grades. Unis know this and many still keep asking for really high grades when the reality is that the majority of applicants won´t be able to achieve them.
Only applying after results day with university grades adjusting entrance grades according to each year pole make sense. Basically what everyone else does in the rest of Europe.

I’ve seen quite a lot of these posts, singling out UoN for offering particularly low grades accompanied with raising of eyebrows in a judgemental fashion.
It was no fault of theirs that two of their students were killed and understandably a lot of prospective students and their parents were put off applying to Nottingham that year. Kind of pisses me off people are ignoring this.

I agree.
