A level results day 2024

How’s everyone else feeling about results day? I’ve got one at uni already and 2nd dd hoping to go to Kent in September. She seems ok about it at the moment although think that will change as it gets closer. Me I’m so keeping my fingers crossed she gets what she wants, I know there will always be other options but she loved the open day. Going to struggle with this one going though as it has been a real journey to get to where she is.

Not to mention that IB students got their results weeks ago, so they have also long known where they were going as well ...or looking for other options.

Every system is different.

Ime if you narrowly miss your IB offer you have to wait until a levels results are out to see if the university will take you anyway. DD’s friend was in limbo for 5 weeks then rejected.

MonsterMunched · 15/08/2024 12:19

DD needed AAA for her first choice, got A*AB plus an A for the EPQ and got in even though the B was the nearest subject to the course subject. Very relieved! Best friend got into her insurance choice. Other friend going to a different uni in the same city so at least she’ll know someone nearby.

DD needed AAA to meet her offer at University of York.

Her grades were BBC but she still got in to York! We're all gobsmacked but very happy

Big congrats - that's great news.
May I ask what her predicted and on track grades were. Were they very different to what she achieved (seems to have been a tough year across many subjects)/

mondaytosunday · 15/08/2024 12:25

@OlympicGoldfish I don't think every uni emails. And it may be a few days yet about accommodation unless they say it's on results day.

To the parents who have disappointed DC right now...(you may not be posting, but you may be reading this thread).

I got 12 A-stars at GCSE (A-star was relatively new at the time, so maybe it was easier).

I then performed terribly in my A-Levels TWICE (I have 8 A-Levels, none above a D, several Ns and a U). I just didn't work hard enough and then cracked under the pressure. I was so disappointed in myself, and my parents were so disappointed in me.

But I'm now 45, I am in an executive-leadership role, doing a job I love, my base salary is over £200K (which is why I name changed) - I own a home, I have a family, and I have a really happy, settled, life.

Of course life's not perfect, but my A-Levels no longer play on my mind as a time I failed.

Even if today is disappointing, even if your child needs to change direction - please know that there is huge scope for professional success and happiness.

Dd had the exact same grading situation as @MonsterMunched except no EPQ. In dd's case the B is in computer science with 1 mark off an A and computer science is her degree subject. As she got into her university anyway, not sure if it's worth going for a remark.

Predicted grades were AAA and her mock
results were A
AB (the B was 2 marks under an A and in the subject she got an A in).

Sorry that’s gone weird- predicted was Astar AA and mocks were Astar AB just.

mondaytosunday · 15/08/2024 12:31

@Havingtoomuchfun my DD didn't get an offer from Cambridge despite having three A stars in hand. Need much more than just good grades now and even then competition is fierce!

Truetoself · 15/08/2024 12:32

So DS wanted to try for another course at his preferred uni. He called the clearing line. They took his details and said they will pass on to admissions. But l see on here people have been able to confirm their clearing places straight away? Do different universities work differently?

My DD didn't get the required grades for her first choice by some margin, but on the UCAS site it says that a decision has not been made, and they want proof of her GCSE Maths grade. Has anyone else ever had this, and is there room to hope?

What's the course?

Did she get a high grade for maths GCSE? Perhaps they are considering taking it into account especially if it could be relevant and she didn't do maths A Level

Never heard of it though. Let us know if you solve the mystery because now I'm intrigued

Sorry she didn't get grades she wanted its so hard

gloriagloria · 15/08/2024 12:36

@listsandbudgets She got a 6 - it's for a health-related course which I think just needs a 4.

Not this year, but a couple of years ago, DD was accepted on one course, but wanted to switch to another (within the same faculty). She phoned the faculty direct and they sorted it out in a day or two.

They must do. DD still waiting for outcome of another course at Nottingham but she got an immediate offer from Newcastle. Both were phone calls. Nottingham sent confirmation that her application was being considered. Newcastle confirmed on the phone then followed up straight away with email.

Daughter couldn't get on the college portal to get results, but could see on her UCAS account that she had been accepted on to her insurance choice - she was gutted. Eventually got her results from the college and they were very disappointing for her - just didn't perform well in her exams. I told her to ring her first choice as they were showing the course on clearing - after a long call, they have accepted her on to her first choice - so all are happy! UCAS portal confirms this.

So, if anyone hasn't made the grade, give the uni a ring - may still get in.

Brilliant - so good of her to be so proactive. Well done her!

worcesterpear · 15/08/2024 12:40

@MonsterMunched I think the boundaries on computer science are really high this year, dd got almost the same mark for maths, which she got an A star in.

Lightdarkshade · 15/08/2024 12:41

PatriciaHolm · 15/08/2024 10:57

*I've been trying to explain to DD just how much things have changed.

Early 90s, I got a place at Cambridge on BCC. Unheard of today.*

Yep - I got an EE offer for Oxford thanks to the exam entry route so i could effectively have done no A level work! I ended up with AAB, which wouldn't get me in today.

Ditto! I got an E in one of my A levels but got in on the exam route

murasaki · 15/08/2024 12:44

If you are applying for the same course that you wrote your personal statement etc for, and just missed a grade, it's going to be easier and faster to make a decision. For a new course, new admissions tutors would have to be involved so it will take longer.

timetodecide2345 · 15/08/2024 12:46

I got two Es at A level. I'm a senior lecturer now ! Life isn't over because of A level results.

CMOTDibbler · 15/08/2024 12:51

DS had disappointing results, but got his insurance place and is very happy with that. Now to get accommodation sorted!

gloriagloria · 15/08/2024 13:02

Twiglets1 · 15/08/2024 12:15

There is definitely room to hope (I'm an ex careers adviser). Make sure you upload the proof of her GCSE Maths asap.

Thanks so much @Twiglets1 She has sent a photo of her certificate to admissions (she did her GCSE two years ago) - should she have uploaded somehow to the UCAS site?

Her mocks were AAA, but most recent predicted grades were AAB
