How’s everyone else feeling about results day? I’ve got one at uni already and 2nd dd hoping to go to Kent in September. She seems ok about it at the moment although think that will change as it gets closer. Me I’m so keeping my fingers crossed she gets what she wants, I know there will always be other options but she loved the open day. Going to struggle with this one going though as it has been a real journey to get to where she is.

So DS wanted to try for another course at his preferred uni. He called the clearing line. They took his details and said they will pass on to admissions. But l see on here people have been able to confirm their clearing places straight away? Do different universities work differently?

They must do - DS got a verbal offer from Leeds this morning on the phone but no email yet - also called Durham who said they send all applications on to admissions to review - again no email so just in limbo waiting now!

They must do. DD still waiting for outcome of another course at Nottingham but she got an immediate offer from Newcastle. Both were phone calls. Nottingham sent confirmation that her application was being considered. Newcastle confirmed on the phone then followed up straight away with email.

What course? dd is going to Nottingham.. I could tell she wanted to from the second she set foot on campus when we went to offer holder day. She'd not been before but applied on spec. It's a wonderful campus and her course seemed to be everything she was hoping for

@jelliebelly @tisallabitofafaff thanks. The wait is draining me

Mine got A star in Computer science.

@listsandbudgets Maths with a year abroad. She has never been to Nottingham! My brother studied there (albeit a long time ago) and loved it.

Where I work we have a lot of people who answer the phones, explain the process, go through the options etc but they don't make the final decision. The decision is made by more senior staff in each department. If that senior staff member has a queue of applications to deal with, has been dragged into a meeting or whatever then it can be a while before they call back.

A* in economics.

DS feeling a little disappointed. He got into his firm with A star A A B, but was predicted all A stars and a friend he was usually on par with academically got 4 A stars. The reality is that in Y13 he has had a serious girlfriend and is going out more so probably didn't do as much work as he needed to to get the top grades. I think this is why he is feeling disappointed with himself.

I want him to be proud of his achievement but also recognise for the future that you need to put a lot of work in if you want to get top results. If I'm honest, I'm also feeling a bit flat that he didn't fulfil his potential, but not showing it. It just feels like a bit of a flat day at the mo.

Hopefully in a few days focus will move on to looking forward to uni.

Mine got an A in Psychology and an A in Philosophy and Ethics. An A in Physical Education and an A* for her EPQ.

All really unexpected although we knew she had worked flat out for 5 months, revising for 8 hours a day.

ZanyFox · 15/08/2024 13:37

Sorry. That's an A star in Psychology, Philosophy and the EPQ
An A in PE

DD got A* in biology, maths and psychology.

ZanyFox · 15/08/2024 13:42

She also got A stars in every single Philosophy paper and every Psychology paper. Sorry, blatant boast but my nephew did really badly bless him so I can't go on about dd very much to family.

MirandaWest · 15/08/2024 13:45

DD got A* in Spanish, History and English Literature 😊

Osco · 15/08/2024 13:47

Well done to all!

For those who got A* and/or As, how did your DCs do at GCSE across all subjects ie numbers of 9/8/7 etc?

Also, did they get 8/9 at GCSE in the subject they got an A/A* grade in at A-level?

My DC is doing GCSEs next year and there has already been some discussion about A-level choices.

pgtips2 · 15/08/2024 13:48

Hijacking this a bit, having this next year.
On applying to unis, those going for Oxbridge tend to be in earlier - schools focus more on getting these done early. However, does that not also mean that all of their other unis can respond (offer, whether conditional/unconditional) earlier too?
I just assumed that Oxbridge needed to be in but that the other would not start processing until most applications were in.

If so, seems it's a huge advantage to applying with the Oxbridge cohort whether a potential for Oxbridge or not!

catmomof3 · 15/08/2024 13:51

DD got AAA but is depressed because she missed out on two A*s by like 2/5 marks. She thinks she has failed herself despite getting into her firm. Really not sure what to say to cheer her up, she's had a tough year with my cancer diagnosis and treatment happening during exams so she has done amazingly well.

I wish she just didn't put so much pressure on herself. She went from being so happy this morning to miserable.

Tortiemiaw · 15/08/2024 13:52

Talking of grades and the difference in what was wanted and what was accepted, mine was told she needed ABB, and got BCCC (B in epq) which apparently though, translates to ABC? Still, we're all happy so the grades are already irrelevant to be fair

stoneysongs · 15/08/2024 13:56

@pgtips2

Yes, unis can and do respond as soon as applications are in. Some don't though, they prefer to wait until after the closing date. DD applied before the Oxbridge deadline and didn't get her last offer until the end of April, which felt like a very long wait.

You don't have to submit all of your choices at the same time, so you could apply just for eg Oxford and then add other courses later if you wanted.

Anyone who applies before the January deadline is guaranteed equal consideration so it's no advantage to apply earlier.

Twiglets1 · 15/08/2024 13:58

gloriagloria · 15/08/2024 13:02

Thanks so much @Twiglets1 She has sent a photo of her certificate to admissions (she did her GCSE two years ago) - should she have uploaded somehow to the UCAS site?

No it is the Unis decision and they will inform UCAS if her status changes to being accepted. Best of luck to her!

Wow! That’s amazing!

I hear you and I know it’s all relative. But if it helps, I’m over the moon my DS didn’t actually fail any. While it’s important to aim high (I’m academic) they’re only young once and IMHO it’s better to enjoy life than be torturing themselves with study just to get closer to perfection. Especially when they went through lockdowns. No one thinks about grades after a few years. It’s experiences that shape you.

Back in the day, I travelled about and most of my mates were in bands in late teens/early 20s and we got qualifications later in life, including PhDs. I think kids these days have so much pressure over so many years.

Daughter couldn't get on the college portal to get results, but could see on her UCAS account that she had been accepted on to her insurance choice - she was gutted. Eventually got her results from the college and they were very disappointing for her - just didn't perform well in her exams. I told her to ring her first choice as they were showing the course on clearing - after a long call, they have accepted her on to her first choice - so all are happy! UCAS portal confirms this.

So, if anyone hasn't made the grade, give the uni a ring - may still get in.

Wow! Good for her!

Make sure she doesn't decline her insurance until she has that in writing.
