A level results day 2024

How’s everyone else feeling about results day? I’ve got one at uni already and 2nd dd hoping to go to Kent in September. She seems ok about it at the moment although think that will change as it gets closer. Me I’m so keeping my fingers crossed she gets what she wants, I know there will always be other options but she loved the open day. Going to struggle with this one going though as it has been a real journey to get to where she is.

Scottish universities start earlier than English ones.
Scotland students can study for free in Scotland and have to pay in England, which I imagine reduces the number of students from Scotland who want to study in England anyway.

Not to mention that IB students got their results weeks ago, so they have also long known where they were going as well ...or looking for other options.

Every system is different.

Daughter couldn't get on the college portal to get results, but could see on her UCAS account that she had been accepted on to her insurance choice - she was gutted. Eventually got her results from the college and they were very disappointing for her - just didn't perform well in her exams. I told her to ring her first choice as they were showing the course on clearing - after a long call, they have accepted her on to her first choice - so all are happy! UCAS portal confirms this.

So, if anyone hasn't made the grade, give the uni a ring - may still get in.

That's brilliant 👏

My DS has over achieved for his Imperial offer with 4 x A Star and a 2 in the STEP. Much relief here!

That's absolutely phenomenal he must have worked his guts out.

Congratulations

HelenHywater · 15/08/2024 11:21

My dd got into her first choice with lower grades than the offer. So pleased for her - she was retaking after an awful couple of years 21-23. So sorry for all of those facing disappointment today. This day last year was absolutely horrendous for my dd.

Just a reminder that exams, job title, salary etc are not what's really important in life.

Real success is being a thoughtful and loving human.

@socks1107 I thought DC that did Btecs already knew their results at this stage. I am sure I have read on WIWIKAU on Facebook that some have their places confirmed. Perhaps depends what type? Glad your DD is super chilled though and getting excited about uni.
I am getting stressed and think DS is too. Particularly as he has said that he no longer wants his reserve option so will go into clearing instead if he doesn’t meet his first choice requirements. I mean obviously I don’t want him to do a course for the sake of it but his reserve guarantees accommodation. I am not sure he fully understands how difficult it is to get accommodation at some universities 😬

Edited

BTEC coursework is marked by the teacher / tutor.

Those marks then have to be internally verified and then externally verified.

The external is someone sent by Pearson and it depends on when they are available.

The external should be given samples of work done at pass, merit and distinction level. If the external is satisfied then the grade becomes official.

The external verifier can ask for other work if they are not happy. Grades rarely change but until this process it is possible so grades are provisional.

This is great news - quite against the usual advice not to bother as they have had a week to think about whether to confirm the place etc etc. Just shows you never know and it's always worth a quick phone call.

Were her actual grades were close to required?

Perplexed20 · 15/08/2024 11:26

DS's 18th bday was yesterday and hot his results today. Pressure was off as he's deferred but got A*AA. So proud of him, he's gone from needing extra help in ks1 to this, through bloody mindedness, determination and hardwork.

Completely disproved the label he went into secondary with.

LlamaNoDrama · 15/08/2024 11:30

Does anyone know if their teachers get told their grades?

NorthernHoliday · 15/08/2024 11:32

DD got the grades she needed for her first choice and is very happy!

OlympicGoldfish · 15/08/2024 11:34

DD still hasn’t got the Uni email, only the UCAS. Can it take a while? Also nothing from her chosen accommodation.

Schools knew the grades yesterday. My DH was busily loading them up onto the system, so once he finished that I imagine any teacher at his school could log in and see.

Not close at all - needed ABB, got BCD

blessedarethequichemakers · 15/08/2024 11:41

DC got ABC plus A in EPQ and needed BBB. Rang and uni took her. So relieved! Hope everyone is ok. I feel like i need to go back to bed!

elliejjtiny · 15/08/2024 11:51

Ds1 got AAA, really pleased.

Well done! Lucky her! My son has got also very low grades compared to predicted, got insurance choice offer, firm choice course was on clearing but not too long, probably this course is just in high demand. Anyway, he is not too bothered as going to do degree apprenticeship and will try to defer entry to his inshurance choice, just in case if apprenticeship will not work for him

timetodecide2345 · 15/08/2024 11:55

I'm on stand by to do some clearing interviews for my university tomorrow. Great to hear that students are getting sorted even though they possibly haven't done as well as they thought.

ShanghaiDiva · 15/08/2024 12:03

dd got 4 A stars and off to Bath. She was admitted to hospital on Boxing Day and has only been attending school part time since as diagnosed with a chronic illness so very proud of her.
Bath has excellent support for students with health issues so it’s a great result for her.

gloriagloria · 15/08/2024 12:05

My DD didn't get the required grades for her first choice by some margin, but on the UCAS site it says that a decision has not been made, and they want proof of her GCSE Maths grade. Has anyone else ever had this, and is there room to hope?

Puppupandaway · 15/08/2024 12:05

My DS needed CCC and he got BBB so he got his firm choice. Sooooo happy. Congrats to everyone.

KielderWater · 15/08/2024 12:08

I presume Universities are making higher offers because once bitten, twice shy after 2020 Covid. But it does seem very poor of them to be making offers so much higher than they are accepting. Is it this year UCAS will start publicising grades accepted rather than just the standard/WA offer grades?

tisallabitofafaff · 15/08/2024 12:12

DD did not make predicted grades, which came as no surprise as she didn't do anywhere near enough revision. Therefore didn't make Durham, also not a surprise. She just missed insurance grades at Newcastle. Her grades were actually higher than she'd feared they would be. She got an offer through clearing then decided to call her insurance - she now has a place on a course with the same entry requirements as the one has she originally applied for! Anyway, very happy. Congratulations to them all and good luck to those still sorting things out.

There is definitely room to hope (I'm an ex careers adviser). Make sure you upload the proof of her GCSE Maths asap.
