A level results day 2024

How’s everyone else feeling about results day? I’ve got one at uni already and 2nd dd hoping to go to Kent in September. She seems ok about it at the moment although think that will change as it gets closer. Me I’m so keeping my fingers crossed she gets what she wants, I know there will always be other options but she loved the open day. Going to struggle with this one going though as it has been a real journey to get to where she is.

Just wondering if UCL will have accommodation for students that used them as insurance. Does anyone have any idea please?

I think it's unlikely as they don't even guarantee accommodation for all first years who firm them, they only say they will 'prioritise' them. This is what it says on the website:

"If you are not eligible to be prioritised for UCL Accommodation, either because you do not meet the Eligibility Criteria or because you are holding UCL as an insurance offer, we advise you to look into Alternative Accommodation."

Here's the link about alternative accommodation - I would get on it asap because there will be quite a few people looking I expect.

www.ucl.ac.uk/accommodation/alternative-accommodation-students

(DD is going to UCL but had them as firm.)

Bless him. I hope he finds the right path when he's had time to absorb everything. Everything happens for a reason! It's so stressful for them isn't it!
My DD is really bright, works hard and does everything right, but she falls apart as soon as she has to sit the actual exam! Her teachers have always said that she's an A* student, until she has to take the test! She got AAA in her mocks, but her result today were BBC. We were lucky that she still got her uni place thank goodness. Good luck.

My DD was much the same - although failure to revise enough didn't help!

Anyway two years after A Level disappointment she's heading off to Aberystwyth and her course will be mostly assessed by essays.

In my day BBC would have been brilliant. All this A* bollocks is crap ..

Thank you. Very happy. Is he supposed to confirm acceptance? It says congratulations etc but there no ‘accept’ button?

We just got an email to say congratulations you've been accepted (York). There's no link to confirm or accept either, so I don't think we need to do anything. It just says we'll get a welcome pack etc shortly.

Why are Scottish Highers released much earlier than A Levels in England?

Surely it gives the Scottish students first dibs on anything. If they dont make their grades do they have to wait until full Clearing today before they apply for courses?

Scottish universities start earlier than English ones.
Scotland students can study for free in Scotland and have to pay in England, which I imagine reduces the number of students from Scotland who want to study in England anyway.

Tracker1234 · 15/08/2024 10:50

Fan - not for the students that got A! And not 'everyone' gets A's!

HPFA · 15/08/2024 10:50

I do hope universities will be more realistic in their offers in the next year.

It feels like they've been offering on COVID grades.

1st choice accommodation now accepted. Amazon wish list of items needed being built.

DD singing "Slipping through my fingers" on a loop for my benefit 🤣

That sounds brilliant! If only more courses were like that! I'm pretty sure my dd will still struggle with exams when she's an uni, but we cross each bridge as it comes!

The vast majority of Scottish students will go to scottish unis, as they are still fee free to Scottish applicants. So it makes little impact on most English/Welsh Unis.

I've been trying to explain to DD just how much things have changed.

Early 90s, I got a place at Cambridge on BCC. Unheard of today.

Scottish academic years are a bit earlier than the rest of the UK, everything is shifted by a few weeks. So yes, they can apply for clearing places before A level results come out but the numbers are small and some unis will make them wait until they know how their A level candidates have done. Same with people doing IB, their results come out before A levels too.

Because they have a completely separate education system. The numbers of Scottish students applying to English universities is tiny so A level students looking at clearing will still have plenty of choice.

PopcornAndGummyBears · 15/08/2024 10:56

The vast majority of Scottish students also apply to university with grades in hand. Some will need additional Higher grades from 6th year, and a few will need AHs, but the majority apply with their H grades which they achieved at the end of 5th year, but will be applying for entry after 6th year, so unconditional offers are much more common there.

Yep - I got an EE offer for Oxford thanks to the exam entry route so i could effectively have done no A level work! I ended up with AAB, which wouldn't get me in today.

DD needed AAA to meet her offer at University of York.

Her grades were BBC but she still got in to York! We're all gobsmacked but very happy

My dd is going there too. Can I ask what subject (roughly if you don't want to say!)

Fantastic, congrats to your dd!
Don't mind at all, she's doing English. What's your daughter doing?

PandaPacer · 15/08/2024 11:07

My DS has over achieved for his Imperial offer with 4 x A Star and a 2 in the STEP. Much relief here!

The Scottish exam system is entirely separate from the rest of the UK. Their exams are also much earlier and you return to school after your exams before the summer to start the next level (apart from in S6). Most Scottish Universities offer based on Highers which are taken at the end of S5 and most students stay on for S6 so are applying with results in hand and mostly get unconditional offers. You can also go straight after Highers (like my DS) without staying to S6 so you will start University age 16 or 17. A reason for the four year degree course.

Those applying to English/Welsh universities needing Advanced Highers do find out earlier but universities won’t know all their clearing places until A level results are out. Also in Scotland the funding arrangements mean there may be clearing places at Scottish Universities for English students but not Scottish ones.

IKEA, a place we always avoided from mid-August til the end of September!
Congratulations to you all from a very old woman, my granddaughter has been offered a place where she didn't think she'd much chance and to the parents who also have of year olds, only another week to wait!
