A level results day 2024

How’s everyone else feeling about results day? I’ve got one at uni already and 2nd dd hoping to go to Kent in September. She seems ok about it at the moment although think that will change as it gets closer. Me I’m so keeping my fingers crossed she gets what she wants, I know there will always be other options but she loved the open day. Going to struggle with this one going though as it has been a real journey to get to where she is.

Has your friend had a look at clearing? She can ring around without declining her existing offer.

Yes thank you. I think she's going to try. It just shows that it's definitely worth aiming high! Even if it seems a long shot.

Thank you. We're really surprised! She's bright and works hard but she struggles badly with exam pressure. She literally left each exam in tears so we didn't think she'd get into York!

My DD's best friend was discouraged by her teachers from applying to York though because she wasn't expecting high enough grades, she's fuming now that she didn't apply aswell because she's got higher grades than my dd!

She can look again, through clearing and perhaps York will be there!

They can go through 'Adjustment' if they want to try for a 'better' University.

Adjustment isn’t available anymore, but they can go through Clearing. Or they can take a gap year and reapply. Lots of options 😀

OlympicGoldfish · 15/08/2024 10:17

Does anyone know, is Clearing on the phone only exactly as what’s on the website? Can they accept with a lower grade? Is there any movement on this?

Yes thank you. I think she's going to try. My DD's insurance was the same as her friends first choice so they were expecting to go to Uni together in September.

Adjustment doesn’t exist anymore. You just try to move upwards through clearing. dS got a Durham offer that way last year

DS is gutted, he was expecting an A in politics as he did on all his mocks and always did really well in the subject, he got a C.
He's not actually applied for uni, as he changed his plans, but he's still disappointed. B in history and D in Maths.
He's wanting to apply for a degree apprenticeship in a few years and I don't know if that's enough, I think the one he was looking at is CCC.

daffodilandtulip · 15/08/2024 10:19

A*
A*
A*
A

Too many stars making the bold go crazy 😂. I'm so proud! DD was so shocked the principal came over as she wasn't sure how to interpret her face.

notsureicandoitagain · 15/08/2024 10:21

Help - DS has his first choice (Uni of Sussex) but didn't tick the box requesting accommodation when he applied way back when. So now he's looking at having nowhere to live on campus and is having a major panic. Has anyone experienced this before? Any advice?

autumn1610 · 15/08/2024 09:16

@Hoppinggreen what was she planning on doing? I was desperate to get onto physio and missed out by a grade and got offered a foundation, I did it but actually dropped out after completing it, as I found the step up too much on a subject I thought I was ok at so knew i just wouldn’t cope on the course. I swapped to something completely different at the same uni

Biology
She has been offered the foundation but as she took a year out and self taught to avoid that.
I think she will probably do that now though but as she will do an Msci in Biology its already 4 years so she will be there 5 now with the costs that involves.
She only just missed the C she needed so will also be getting a remark and maybe if she has a Foundation place but then ends up with a C they will let her switch.
She is a bit happoer than she was at 8 am thats for sure anyway

tadjennyp · 15/08/2024 10:22

DD got her results in July and were much better than expected (IB results came out on 6th July) so decided to reject her firm offer and go for the uni whose offer was highest that she turned down in the first place. She rang them first and had an offer via email before she declined her place on UCAS to then apply officially through clearing. It's not adjustment as such, but is a uni with a higher tariff normally.

DD phoned Clearing at her 1st choice and it was exactly the same as on the website. She hoped that speaking to someone may be different but it wasn't

Bless him. I hope he finds the right path when he's had time to absorb everything. Everything happens for a reason! It's so stressful for them isn't it!
My DD is really bright, works hard and does everything right, but she falls apart as soon as she has to sit the actual exam! Her teachers have always said that she's an A* student, until she has to take the test! She got AAA in her mocks, but her result today were BBC. We were lucky that she still got her uni place thank goodness. Good luck.

Ah interesting! Does make it much simpler keeping it all as 'Clearing' though.

Beth216 · 15/08/2024 10:24

AQA maths have hugely upped the grade boundaries, DS got 73% and still missed out on an A, (last year he'd have had an A with 19 points to spare), he got into his first choice thanks to being contextual but was disappointed. Also got a B in AQA physics, he knew paper 2 was a doozy so wasn't so surprised there. Got an A star in his favourite though.

DD needed AAA to meet her offer at University of York.

Her grades were BBC but she still got in to York! We're all gobsmacked but very happy

@TheNuthatch Gosh - what a relief! Do you mind if I ask which course? congrats to her

SuccessM · 15/08/2024 09:36

Congratulations to everyone whose DD or DS met their offers. Praying that those that missed find a place where they will be happy and excel. My DD missed her Cambridge offer by 3 marks. However, she met her UCL offer which is her insurance for BSc Economics. She got 89% in Further maths and got an A but requires 90% to make A star and in her raw score that equates to 3 marks off. Asking 90% for A star in Further maths is ridiculous. We thank God ang give HIM all the glory. God knows best! My DD is taking it well.

My DS got 4 A* maths, FM, physics, chemistry but still missed his Cambridge offer because his STEP paper grades was not good enough.
He went somewhere else instead and ended up being in the right place at the right time for am amazing career opportunity.Everything happens for a reason

No not at all! She's doing English hun

SuccessM · 15/08/2024 10:32

Just wondering if UCL will have accommodation for students that used them as insurance. Does anyone have any idea please?

BunnyLake · 15/08/2024 10:06

Thank you. Very happy. Is he supposed to confirm acceptance? It says congratulations etc but there no ‘accept’ button?

My daughter had to formally Accept her offer - there was link in her email.

OublietteBravo · 15/08/2024 10:38

DS seems to have vanished. I presume he’s hanging out with his mates and celebrating. Good for him!

Niminy · 15/08/2024 10:04

I can't say this anywhere else (have public role so really wary of posting on social media): DS2 got 3 x A* and is going to Oxford! I'm so so proud of him. We've moved schools a lot, and by and large he's been to non-outstanding schools. He's just worked really hard and, well, he's great.

That’s great congratulations to him.🎉 My son is really bright but just doesn’t work hard enough. He’s got his insurance though and we’re very happy with that.

WombatChocolate · 15/08/2024 10:39

DS got 3 x A star. Off to Durham. Thrilled.

DS1 exactly the same, went through clearing last year and got into a course he's pretty happy with. I'm proud of them both, because DS1 had a terrible time at school and explored every option in their system of sanctions. To see him grow up and find his way to university makes me very proud.

Tracker1234 · 15/08/2024 10:42

Why are Scottish Highers released much earlier than A Levels in England?

Surely it gives the Scottish students first dibs on anything. If they dont make their grades do they have to wait until full Clearing today before they apply for courses?
